Just In Time For Pancake Week

[January 30th to February 5th - 2008]

Perfect PancakesFor the pancake lovers among us, this is probably great news!!

There are some lovely pancake recipes on All Recipes.com which you can use to vary your pancakes from the normal cinnamon sugar filling.
Personally I’m not keen on all the sweet fillings, so I’ll be reading up on the savoury fillings ;)

Still, I don’t know if I’ll be able to eat pancakes every day for a week…

I also read up on the history of pancakes, and found it rather interesting. Pancake Week is grounded in ancient tradition. During the Middle Ages, it was common practice to prepare for the austerity of Lent by purging the pantry of luxurious foods such as eggs, butter and milk. These ingredients often became big batches of pancakes. To this day, many communities around the world feast on pancakes all the way through Shrove Tuesday–also known as Fat Tuesday or Mardi Gras–before the season of moderation begins on Ash Wednesday. In fact, another name for Fat Tuesday is Pancake Day.

Getting Arty

DiscoverI’m always intrigued by art, and would love to buy some nice paintings for the new house. I’ve often looked at the paintings in local galleries, and I’ve imagined a hundred different themes for our house.

If you have that same passion for good quality art, have a look at Park West Art Gallery. They have truely unique paintings that will brighten up any room, or house for that matter.

I had some art classes when I was in high school, and I would actually love to paint things myself - for our home. I just lack the guts to start. One day when I’m a ’stay at home mom’ I might do just that!

Downloading Youtube Video’s WithOUT AresTube

In the past when I wanted to download a Youtube video, I used Arestube - which worked like a charm. Lately though, I suspect that Youtube has made some changes to their security, and now Arestube can’t download their video’s anymore. Pity, cause I was a loyal Arestube fan.

Youtube On My ComputerThere are also various sites which claim that you can download Youtube video’s from them, but none of these worked for me - all of them giving an error that

the Youtube file couldn’t be found.

I then started looking around for another way to get Youtube video’s on my harddrive, and had searched high and low for a software app which would enable me

to do this.
Finally I came up with the following steps…

Firefox (browser) has a add-on which you can install to download Youtube video’s, called Download Helper. Once you have that installed, you can download Youtube video’s to your harddrive as .flv files. Not many standard

players are able to play this format though, so off I went, in search of a new player, or codec for one of my existing players.

I found Combined Community Codec Pack [6.06MB], which is a codec that enables

you to view .flv video files in Media Player. This is all very grand if you just want to use the video on your own computer, but if you want to forward this

video to a friend, you’d have to send them the codec pack as well as the video file.

So now I had to find a converter for .flv files, to .wmv or .mov files. *sigh*

On Download.com,I managed to find Total Video Converter [5.12MB] for free.

Using that I was able to convert my .flv files to .wmv- which are usually played by all standard Windows Media Players. The only downside to that converter is that it places a link to their website in the top left corner of the video, but if you can live with that, its great.

Its quite a hassle as you can see, but once you have all the components installed it should take so much time. Besides, a lot of us will do this with a

Lucky Luke’s Horse?

Lucky LukeWhat was the name of Lucky Luke’s horse? I am 99% sure that I’m correct in saying that it was Jolly, but still people argue with me… Anyone else got any ideas?

I can still remember this cartoon’s theme song… LOL

It was definitely one of my favourites, that, along with Moomin. Loved it! :D

Credibility On The Internet

I guess we’ve all come to face the big question of “how credible is this information really” when reading something on a blog or website. We’ve all had our doubts about the source, and sometimes the Photoshop abilities of the image editor.

There are so many scams and nonsense stories going around on e-mail that we’ve all built up a resistance to mails showing any medical problem, telling us that we’ve won something, or asking for our bank details.

We’ve become so used to all this, that we’re ‘programmed’ to ignore these different forms of spam. There is something like blog spam as well - especially since people started paying money for blogging about their services. I myself post paid posts, and I agree that these posts can seriously confuse readers of the writers opinion, likes and dislikes. I’ve decided to tag all my paid posts appropriately, and thus you can easily distinguish these from the non paid posts. Personally, I like reading paid posts . It gives me new ideas of how to present the content, and how to go about advertising without sounding like a Homemark shopping channel ad.

Still, when we google a topic these days, most of the results are made up of blogs. The problem with this is, blogs are very opinionated, and we can’t always ‘trust’ the content. Though some of us might find it extrememly interesting to read about others’ opinions, we can’t necessarily believe everything we read there.

I use wikipedia if I really need to know the facts about something, and find that quite helpful, but still, bloggers’ credibility is being stripped away more each day.  I could tell you that I have a pet lion, and that I ride on its back to work each day, and you might very well believe me!  We used to tell that story while living in England, and people really believed it!!  I would also probably believe a lot of myths about foreign countries if they had told me.  So somehow we have to find the truth in this maze of lies and warped images.  We have to try and figure out who’s trustworthy, and if they will stay that way.

Then again, if you don’t want the facts, you can just enjoy reading all the make belief tales and have a merry time.

But that’s only my opinion ;)

Dragonflies And Astronauts

DragonflyI love that song. Most SA readers will know this song, but for international visitors who would like to know what I’m on about, check the video on Youtube. I love the Parlotones and I need to buy their new album, but as I was going through my playlist this morning, I can across “Dragonflies and Astronauts” again. Such a nice song.

I’m really taken aback by the South African bands lately. Prime Circle’s latest CD is really good, and I simply LOVE it. Still Parlotones are a bit higher on my rank list - I really need to get to the shops for their latest CD.

Everyone’s Doing It In Green

Green is the colour of the season!! Today I saw a pic on Women24 showing three celebs with GREEN on the red carpet - they’re all following my lead! Haha…

Green Celebrity Dresses

The dress in the middle, which Drew Barrymore is wearing, is the colour that I have chosen for our wedding, its the colour of our table overlays ;) - I think its absolutely lovely!!Bridesmaid Dress

I fitted the dress again this weekend, and each time I do so, I don’t want to take it off again. Its very close to being finished now - I’m so excited!! The bridesmaid’s dress still has to be made, but I’m not stressing about that really - lol.

I want something really plain and simple, and already got a sample pic for it…

As for my dress - you’re gonna have to wait a bit more than a month before you can see that! I have pics, but I’m not sharing them yet ;)
