Why Are Your Eyes So Big?
In my line of work, its quite important to see well. One of the downsides though is that sitting in front of a computer screen eight hours a day does NOT really do my eyes any good. I need to go for an eye test soon, and I suspect I might have to get prescription glasses. Glasses are such a schlep, and sometimes really uncomfortable, but my eyes are way to dry for contact lenses. *sigh* I know I should just go… but really. I just can’t get myself so far. I found Great Discovry:$ 8 Prescription Glasses From Zenni Optical, maybe those will be easier!

I Wish I Could Write!
Whenever I have to write a formal letter or document I just realize again that I seriously lack some writing skills. I should see if I can find any courses or writing tips! My vocabulary seems to shrink down rapidly whenever I start a letter with the phrase “To Whom It May Concern”. I guess its a metal block? Same with accounting for me though. I just can’t seem to get my head around it.
I find it amusing how people think any ‘blogger’ can write a column for a newspaper and be just as successful or even better than the guys who spent years studying how to write, and have another couple of years of experience behind them.
We bloggers love writing yes. But that definitely doesn’t mean that we’re great at it. It means that we’ve found a place to share thoughts, and sometimes vent, but that’s all. Just cause people read our blogs doesn’t mean we’re such good writers.
I think there is still so much for us to learn, and I guess if we look for it (even on the internet maybe?) we might just find something to help us on our road to small time writers.
No commentsThis Should Be Posted In All Schools And Work Places
Love him or hate him, he sure hits the nail on the head with this! Bill Gates gave a speech at a High School about 11 things they did not and will not learn in school. He talks about how feel-good, politically correct teachings created a generation of kids with no concept of reality and how this concept set them up for failure in the real world.
Rule 1: Life is not fair - get used to it!
Rule 2: The world won’t care about your self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself.
Rule 3: You will NOT make $60,000 a year right out of high school. You won’t be a vice-president with a phone until you earn both.
Rule 4: If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss.
Rule 5: Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your Grandparents had a different word for burger flipping: they called it opportunity.
Rule 6: If you mess up, it’s not your parents’ fault, so don’t whine about your mistakes, learn from them.
Rule 7: Before you were born, your parents weren’t as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how cool you thought you were. So before you save the rain forest from the parasites of your parent’s generation, try delousing the closet in your own room.
Rule 8: Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life HAS NOT. In some schools, they have abolished failing grades and they’ll give you as MANY TIMES as you want to get the right answer. This doesn’t bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life.
Rule 9: Life is not divided into semesters. You don’t get summers off and very few employers are interested in helping you FIND YOURSELF. Do that on your own time.
Rule 10: Television is NOT real life. In real life people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.
Rule 11: Be nice to nerds. Chances are you’ll end up working for one.
The Easter Bunny, Clowns And Lots Of Make Up AKA Good Old Times
I’ve been thinking back tonight. Waaay back. When I was still playing with my nephews. Dressing them up as clowns and the easter bunny. I suppose I was probably the meanest (and most fun) aunt anyone could ever ask for
I have three nephews who are very close in age. The oldest two are only 7 years younger than me, and strangely enough, we played together like brothers and sister. I made them dress up, put make up on them to make them look like clowns, and play all kinds of games. We pretended to be a circus, and did all kinds of shows with tricks and what not (sometimes trying to include my cat, but I don’t remember that ever being successful).
I made them play school with me being the teacher. Still they loved it, as did I. I remember one time specifically I dressed my one nephew as the easter bunny. Complete with purple and white striped socks that went up all the way to his thigh. As if that wasn’t enough, he also got stocking over his head - the legs stuffed with whatever I could find to make them look like ears. And make up smeared over the stocking part that covered his face. The funniest of all this was that the other two nephews actually believed it was the easter bunny!!
When we talk about it now they still tell me what a horrible aunt I was, but its all in good humor. Its such fond memories for me. I wish we could’ve had photo’s of those times! The older two are turning 18 this year, and the younger one 16. One of the older ones is writing is SAT’s end of January, and he’s already got his driver’s license too. It seems so strange - a lifetime ago. Here they are starting their lives on their own, and I’m getting married. Its a pity we live so far apart - I wish we could spend more time together. I’m still thankful for the family members that are around, but I can’t help to miss them. At least one of the nephews is still around, and we see each other quite regularly - we get along really well. Just strange how things change without us noticing. All of a sudden when you wipe your eyes out, everyones around you has grown up, and you’ve grown old.
1 commentLower Internations Call Rates
We used international phone cards while being in the UK, but how much do these really help? I had my doubts about them, and have always trusted people to tell me whether these are really worthwhile or not.
I mean, do you REALLY save money using these? There are quite a few companies that provide cheaper calling cards. They usually sell different cards for different regions. For instance I had to buy a card that included South Africa, and then I’d phone, and could talk for much longer than what I would normally do on my own phone bill. But I found that its just worthwhile if you make these international calls regularly - there’s always skype and e-mail too!
My Green Wedding
I’m going to drive you crazy these next two months. I’m counting the days till our wedding, and today is exactly 2 months. There are still so many things that need to be done, but in the end it will all work out well, right? Right.
I cannot believe how quickly the time has gone by so far. Though we have done a lot as well, it seems there’s still a mountain in front of us. We’ve completed the invites, some have even been sent out. We’ve completed the table overlays, and the top of my dress is finished (and BEAUTIFUL).
The colour I have chosen is green. Its a strange kind of almost lime green, but a bit less bright, and a bit more rich… I will scan a piece in to show you.
The invites are also a white & green combination, which I absolutely love. As you can probably tell, I love green. Its just so ‘alive’. We’re combining it with white - a lot of white! White roses, white chair covers and white table cloths.
I never imagined that planning a wedding could be so much work, but here I am, discovering it all for myself! Tomorrow evening I’m going to have my trial make up, and I’m really excited about it! Hold thumbs that I like it
For now, I gotta get my mind of wedding stuff, and remember that I’m still trying to have a normal life :P…

The Mom Test
I was out walking with my 4 year old daughter. She picked up something
off the ground and started to put it in her mouth. I took the item away
from her and I asked her not to do that.
“Why?” my daughter asked.
“Because it’s been on the ground, you don’t know where it’s been, it’s
dirty, and probably has germs,” I replied.
At this point, my daughter looked at me with total admiration and asked,
“Momma, how do you know all this stuff. You are so smart.”
I was thinking quickly, “All moms know this stuff. It’s on the Mom Test.
You have to know it, or they don’t let you be a Mom.”
We walked along in silence for 2 or 3 minutes, but she was evidently
pondering this new information. “Oh…I get it!” she beamed, “So if you
don’t pass the test you have to be the dad.”
”Exactly,” I replied back with a big smile on my face.
1 commentLiving The American Dream
When people talk about “The American Dream”, I guess they each have their own image of this. Each person has a different way they would want their lives to turn out. If I ever had to opportunity to get a Green Card, I wouldn’t think twice. Living abroad is something I’ve wanted to do for as long as I can remember. I would love to ’setup camp’ on the other side of the ocean. I’ve often dreamt of owning a flat at the top of a huge apartment building in the middle of New York. Or living on the country side somewhere close to a ‘creek’ - in South Africa we only have ’spruitjies’, which I suppose nothing other than a creek, but still, you cannot have a creek in South Africa. LOL.
Some of my family are already living in the United States, and they have Green Cards, but there’s not really a way I can get there except maybe through the Green Card lottery. They take online applications, and that is free, but then later on you have to pay x amount for administration costs etc. I suppose it is worthwhile, but I don’t know how trustworthy a system like that really is. I’ve not really heard any success stories, but still, I’m willing to give it a go. Now let me seriously go and consider this…
