Eating Squirrels?!

I love squirrels; they’re cute and fluffy  – even though I know they are rodents, I still find them adorable. Now, enough cuteness! I was reading a magazine at the hairdresser last week – yes, I am embarrassed to admit, it was the You magazine, which I never read except when I am at the hairdresser or doctor :) – Anyway – Beth Ditto apparently used to eat squirrels when she was a child.  The magazine went on explaining (quite elaborately) how she and her friends used to skin the squirrels and then have a squirrel barbecue.

Squirrel Kebabs On The Menu - Eating Squirrels

Now, British chef, Ed Chester went one step further, and added the cute fluffy rodents to the restaurant menu where he works.  Squirrel kebab can now be found on the list of scrumptious dishes  at this restaurant in Otterton Mill, near Budleigh Salterton, Devon (UK).

Ed Chester reckons squirrel meat is delicious and is also selling pates and fricassees made from the rodents, “I am never going to put anything horrible on the menu. Squirrel is great meat. It is genuinely good and this is not a gimmick.”

I can’t say that it sounds very appealing, and I am just thankful that I don’t have to give this a try.  And I thank goodness I didn’t have friends like Beth Ditto when I was a child!

Hallucinogenic properties of the mulberry plant!

What your mom {probably} never told you about mulberry plants is that you can get high from ingesting the white sap in all parts of the plant except the ripe fruit.

Mulberries – Red, Black & White – WARNING: Do not eat the unripe fruit and leaves because they may be mildly hallucinogenic. Ripened fruits are very edible.
Native American Medicine: Alabama [Indians] infused roots and drank as a stimulant for increased energy.
Unripe fruit and green parts of the plant have a white sap that is intoxicating and mildly hallucinogenic.

Sounds an awful lot like Ecstasy to me!! :O

The Shell House

I received this set of photo’s via e-mail, and found it phenomenal to realize -yet again – the power of the human mind and the creativity thereof. These photographs resemble something which I may have dreamed of as a child – something which was so far fetched, that I could only imagine it to be part of a fairytale. I have such an appreciation for people who are not afraid to remember, and then live these dreams. Bravo for the Mexican Architect, Javier Senosiain.

Jackson Fever

All of a sudden it has taken the radio & tv stations by storm.  Its in the newspaper, people talk about it, and I’ve even received jokes about it less that 24hrs after he was reported dead.  Its all everyone can think of.  Michael Jackson, Michael Jackson, Michael Jackson!!!  Some people have even been fooled into thinking that he may still be alive, but thank you for clearing that up for us Hannah Lowen.  But honestly, I don’t care.  Jackson fever seems to be spreading faster than swine flu, and its effects are definitely worse.  People are behaving like complete morons!!!

I think its completely absurd, and maybe even a bit retarded that people are now, all of a sudden, idolizing this man, who they were ripping apart a few months back, because he’s claimed to be a child molester.

Because I didn’t know him personally, I cannot claim to be sure of any of this, neither can I say that he was an amazing person.  In my eyes, he was just another guy… Another person trying to make their way through life, wanting to be appreciated & loved.  Just a pity that he probably never experienced either of those.

Cow Leapt ON TOP of Nissan’s Roofrack!?

Every once in a while a tale so bizarre that it can only be described as weirder than fiction walks through the doors of the Daily Dispatch. Monday was such a day. It came in the form of Peddie chief traffic officer Johann Jooste, who took these pictures. See below for the story he had to tell…
Jooste said he was in his office at the Ngqushwa Municipality when he heard a commotion and went outside to see what it was all about.
“At first, I thought the driver was ferrying the cow on the bakkie’s roof. Then the driver got out, and told us that he was here to report an accident,” an incredulous Jooste said.
Apparently, the driver hit the cow on the N2 outside Peddie and the animal flipped right over, landing on the tough little Nissan 1400’s roof.
The shocked, but uninjured driver proceeded to the traffic department, with the cow on top of the bakkie.
Jooste said the unfortunate animal suffered serious injuries and was to be put down.
“In all my 29 years as a traffic officer, I have never seen something like this,” Jooste added.
All the DispatchOnline team can say is: “Only in the Eastern Cape.”

If Life Gives You Lemons, Organize A Festival?

The annual Lemon Festival also known as “Fête du Citron” in Menton, a town located on the coast of the French-Italian border, built these amazing statues made out of citrus fruits. Made completely out of LEMONS,ORANGES, GRAPEFRUITS, AND LIMES. This is quite something even on photo’s, I can’t imagine what it must be like in real life – imagine the flavors in the air?!
