We’re Living In The Most Amazing Time

Don’t you find it amazing that there are so many people, in so many different countries, each writing in there little space on the web.  Each sharing his or her opinion, and then in turn there are people reading their thoughts.

I find it amazing to think that I am part of this revolution!  Just think about our parents and grandparents.  They could probably not even imagine something like we have today.

Today we have blogs, Facebook, Myspace, and so the endless list goes on and on.  We’re literally living in a technological overdose.

To all of you who blog, I want to remind you that we’re all part of something new and incredible.  Something which has never happened on earth before.  What a priviledge to be part of this.

I’m loving it!

Can I Get A Turn Please?!

I’ve lately had such a craving to write, and though I hardly ever get time to do so, I still write blog posts in my mind. Its strange how that becomes a habit after you’ve blogged for a while, and still now – when I haven’t written a proper post in months, I still catch myself structuring my thoughts in such a way that I’ll be able to write them later.

I realized the other day that one of my big reasons for blogging, is because I struggle to express myself verbally. I either can’t find the right words at the right time to convey my feelings, or someone interrupts me. I know I do it too, as do most people, but I’m sure I’m one of the more “interruptable” people. Whenever I’m in a conversation with more than three people I hardly ever get to finish my sentence, let alone story! You can probably say that its my fault because I just leave it after I’ve been interrupted more than twice, but I hate having to fight for a turn to speak.

Its for this very reason that I prefer spending time with fewer people in a conversation. I don’t mind big social events, but I’m not the type of person who thrives huge social events. I’d much rather have a quiet evening at home with fewer friends, and actually finish whatever it is I’m saying, than spending a night with a huge group of friends, trying to finish one sentence, and at the end still not doing so.

I know it may sound vain that I feel so strongly about finishing my own sentence or story, and yes, I do know that its important to listen as well. But I think I do listen, its just also nice to contribute to a conversation, and having people WANT to listen to you :)

Extra Effort

For the people who you love, take time to say “I miss you“. Take time to let them know that you care for them. Sometimes those are the moment which they remember for a lifetime.
We all know how quickly circumstances can change, and how we can wish we had rather told someone how much we care for them. I know myself, that I need to concentrate on this more. And that I need to spend special attention on taking time for MAKING special moments with the people close to me.

Maybe you know what I’m talking about, and maybe you try to show your love, but we can usually all improve ourselves on this. If you had to die today, would your family and friends know that they were really loved by you. Would they have good memories to hold onto for the rest of their lives? If you feel like you need some romantic ideas to let your better half know they’re appreciated, see what you can find on the internet, but first of all, remember to tell them you love them!

Credibility On The Internet

I guess we’ve all come to face the big question of “how credible is this information really” when reading something on a blog or website. We’ve all had our doubts about the source, and sometimes the Photoshop abilities of the image editor.

There are so many scams and nonsense stories going around on e-mail that we’ve all built up a resistance to mails showing any medical problem, telling us that we’ve won something, or asking for our bank details.

We’ve become so used to all this, that we’re ‘programmed’ to ignore these different forms of spam. There is something like blog spam as well – especially since people started paying money for blogging about their services. I myself post paid posts, and I agree that these posts can seriously confuse readers of the writers opinion, likes and dislikes. I’ve decided to tag all my paid posts appropriately, and thus you can easily distinguish these from the non paid posts. Personally, I like reading paid posts . It gives me new ideas of how to present the content, and how to go about advertising without sounding like a Homemark shopping channel ad.

Still, when we google a topic these days, most of the results are made up of blogs. The problem with this is, blogs are very opinionated, and we can’t always ‘trust’ the content. Though some of us might find it extrememly interesting to read about others’ opinions, we can’t necessarily believe everything we read there.

I use wikipedia if I really need to know the facts about something, and find that quite helpful, but still, bloggers’ credibility is being stripped away more each day.  I could tell you that I have a pet lion, and that I ride on its back to work each day, and you might very well believe me!  We used to tell that story while living in England, and people really believed it!!  I would also probably believe a lot of myths about foreign countries if they had told me.  So somehow we have to find the truth in this maze of lies and warped images.  We have to try and figure out who’s trustworthy, and if they will stay that way.

Then again, if you don’t want the facts, you can just enjoy reading all the make belief tales and have a merry time.

But that’s only my opinion ;)

My Dream Come True & The Eskom Nightmare

Strange as it may seem, I might be moving into a place of our very own sometime soon! We’ve found a lovely townhouse, and I can move in in about 2 weeks time!!! Fantastic! I just realized now though that I don’t have half of what I might need, but who cares? Its our own little home, and I’m absolutely ecstatic!!!

Further more we’ve been experiencing Eskom’s load shedding in its full glory!! I’ve had about 4hrs off work each day because of the power failures. This is not as much fun as it might have been had I still been in school… See at work I still have the same responsibilities, but just less time to complete the tasks – that’s not so much fun…
Today I spent a lot of that time driving around in the mad traffic (caused by no working traffic lights), and then after that I had a on the grass, in the shade, outside our office building. The nap was good, up until the point where the power went back on. I don’t mind working, but waking me up from an afternoon nap is not always such a good idea :P I’m pretty grumpy.

Now I’m exhausted again – definitely not from working, but from heat exhaustion rather I suspect. LOL. Its lovely summer weather again here, and I’m loving it – just a pity we don’t have our aircon on UPS!!

Who’d Like To Be My Experiment?

Mwuahahahaha….. Okay, I was just trying to sound scary. Did I succeed?

I’m thinking now, about people who have to do a BIG thing for another person (as a service) for the first time. Obviously doctors and the like are assisted in their first operation etc. But what about someone like an interior decorator? Do these people tell their first suckers that they’re the experiment? That they’ll be the ones to make up their portfolio?I’m sure a lot of them don’t, and just pretend that they’ve been doing this kind of thing for years. Yes, you can ask for photo’s of their previous work, but those are easily forget – I can make myself a lovely portfolio by just grabbing some images of the internet.

If I were to use someone like this I would want to have a reference – someone who can actually recommend them to me (though I don’t know how ethical that is – or how sane I’d appear). Those can be arranged too though. So what is the BEST way to make sure that you’re not paying for a disaster? Or that the person is going to run off with your money. In the States and the UK this might not be so common, but there is an incredible amount of corruption in South Africa. So much so that I’m starting to doubt too many people for my own good sanity.

In the end I will just to it all myself. I suppose that’s not so bad, but you can’t do EVERYTHING yourself? *sigh*

What Makes Me Normal, & Others Weird?

I suppose its a combination of one’s background, religion, culture, morals and experiences that determine that, and of course one’s personality.

Hypnosis is not something that I feel comfortable with. You might find that its due to some of the factors listed above, and I will probably never go for hypnosis myself either. I have found however, that you can now get hypnosis downloads online. How bizarre.

HypnosisI suppose in the modern world (and maybe not so modern world as well), this is (was) used instead of psychologists – or even sometimes, BY psychologists. No more of that though. If you need help being hypnotised, you can now do it straight from your computer, in the privacy of… well, hopefully your own home – NOT YOUR OFFICE.

According to the ‘Instant Hypnosis’ website, they can help you improve your golf playing skills, relieve your allergies, as well as give you a magical charisma & enlarge your breasts!

Now, I don’t know how successful this sort of therapy is, but if you’re one who’s keen to try new things, you might do this.

Personally I stick to the old fashioned, conventional ways – I’m even a bit sceptical of psychologists!

Load Shedding Again

If you don’t know the Eskom story yet, here’s the short version. Eskom, South Africa’s power supplier, has recently started cutting the power, because they cannot generate enough power for the whole country, hence we’re experiencing a lot of power outages, also known as load shedding.
Yesterday, Eskom was so clever to cut their own power.

I suppose one of the most googled terms in South Africa is ‘load shedding schedule’. We’re all waiting in anticipation to see if the power does go out when scheduled. Sometimes it does, sometimes it stays on, and sometimes it goes out without being scheduled at all.Broken Light Buld

For this very reason I have become paranoid about saving all my work. My fingers are constantly hitting CTRL+S while I work.

I suppose its not a bad habit, but since CTRL+S has become such a strong habit that I try to ’save’ whilst packing lunch, or brushing my teeth, its probably not such a good thing. Its really getting to me now…

Looking At The Brightside Is Not Enough

People say we should focus on the good things in life. And to a certain extent I agree with them. We SHOULD be thankful for all we have. There are so many people who have nothing. Literally nothing. People die of hunger each day and disease each day. People lose their families due to war, and accidents.

HurtI just wonder how can I focus on the positive so easily then. Unashamedly oblivious of the pain and agony of the world. Quietly ignoring their cries for help? Its so easy to focus and be thankful for the good things in our lives, but when do we start doing something for those who do not have something – not even one single thing - in their lives to make them happy.

I was walking in a parking lot during lunch, and car guard was so friendly. He seemed incredibly happy to be doing his job. He welcomed me, and told me to enjoy my shopping, even gave me a cheerful smile. But when he goes home he might have to eat by candle light in the freezing cold because he cannot afford electricity or gas. He cannot afford to buy all six his children vegetables like we’ve been taught. He walks home, because the little money he earns is barely enough to keep him and his family alive. Still he smiles, and he’s friendly to each person who passes him. Sometimes rudely stared at, and even ignored when he tries to make small talk. Do these people know how they crush that poor man’s soul? When do we acknowledge these people? When do we start to realize that it might well have been us? He isn’t any less a person that anyone else – but rather more, so why do people get so irritated with him? Willing him to keep quiet. Maybe they’re embarrassed to be seen talking to someone who struggles to make ends meet? Maybe they’re irritated because they think he wants money.

Sometimes I really wish I was an animal. However strange this might sound, they don’t pretend that one giraffe is better than the other. That, just because he had fresh green leaves this morning, he’s somehow superior? What has that got to do with anything? In the end the one who runs fastest and is fittest will be the survivor, and that’s all that matters to them.

Not the colour of their spots. The food they eat. Or the place they sleep. The fact that they’re alive and well is sufficient.

In the end its not enough to ‘be thankful for what you have’ and look the other way. We need to be thankful, but we also need to stop thinking that that’s enough. We need to start doing. Helping. Giving. And even just loving. Just being friendly might mean the world to another. Respecting him as a person will mean much more than the five Rands you don’t want to give him in any case.

Pigeon Noises

Why do pigeons make pigeon noises? I’m sure if you’re an ornithologist or you know how to Google, you can figure that out.

An easy answer would be because they’re pigeons, and that’s what pigeons do.

Pigeon Noises At Night

I could google that now and give you the a clever answer too. However, I want to know why pigeons make those “koer” noises at night. In the middle of the night – like last night 12:30??

(Koer is an Afrikaans pigeon noise – by the way, do they make the same noise in the US? :P ) .

Do they have a bad dream & talk in their sleep? It doesn’t sound as if they’re alarmed, so I doubt if it was to alarm fellow pigeons of a cat or something.

I’m really suspecting that pigeons, like humans, talk in their sleep. :D
