Garden Gadget!

I am not usually keen on garden work, and I am VERY thankful that we have gardening services at the moment!

However, if you combine gardening services with a gadget, you have my attention! I would almost go so far as to watch my plants grow, just to be able to cut them again with the funky Garden Groom gadget!!

It looks a bit like one of those hand held Hoover vacuum cleaners. Trims, shreds AND collects the clippings, so you can either dispose or use this as compost!  I’m sure this will save a lot of time for people who normally spend time gardening, especially for only $100, plus you can even order online!

Want To Enhance Your Computer Performance?

As I am writing this, I just started the process of reviewing the jv16 PowerTools 2009 application. I am rather passionate about almost any type of software that makes my life easier, and the whole point of jv16 PowerTools is to speed up your computer, and keep it going smoothly, but it sounds a little too idyllic for my liking, though I must admit I’m a skeptic when it comes to software which claim to make your computer, “faster, better and hassle fee”.

The download has just completed, which was just over 5MB (Not bad at all), and I am now starting the installation. During the first start up, I am again jocund to find that they offer a backup option, should anything go wrong.

They had a warning that some of the functions might not be necessary for all user, and you’d have to check for yourself what you need. Should you not know what a specific feature entails, rather find out before trying it out.

I first scanned my registry, and found that, even though it took a while, it was worth the wait

Then I had a look at the system tools section, where there are, amongst others, the option to set which programs you want to be started automatically when booting up your computer.

I must say, I was impressed with the intuitiveness of the application, and the ease of use, but I would not necessarily recommend a novice to use it. In my opinion this tool can be extremely helpful for someone who knows what he’s doing, but in the wrong hands it might just be dangerous. My reason for this opinion is that backups are not made by default, and a novice user can easily neglect to choose the option which will make backups of their current system. Once they’ve run the registry clear for instance, without having made a backup, they might end up with programs which don’t work anymore, due to some components being lost.

Overall, I still think its a great tool though, and after rebooting my computer, I can already see the difference in performance, and I must say that I’m impressed :)

Time4Sleep

Unfortunately I didn’t have the privilege to go on holiday during December , but we did house sit for a few days, and I realized how thankful I am for my own bed. I guess its like all the little comforts of our own home, but my bed is definitely one of my most loved items. Having a good night’s sleep is absolutely priceless for me, and a comfy bed is obviously a very important part of that.

Digger BedToday I found a website of a company based in the UK, known as Time4Sleep. They have a wide variety of absolutely stunning beds. I found the childrens bed ranges especially cute! The “Digger Bed” being my favourite!

I can just imagine how a little kid will feel

They have marked down certain ranges with up to 45%, and they offer free delivery on orders of £499 or more!!

For those of you who are not interested in the kiddies bed ranges, they have beautiful beds on the “Sale” tab.  If you cannot find something there which you like, they still have leather beds, antique or French style!!

I was quite impressed by the storage beds.  I had an image of a storage bed in mind, and was surprized to see the stunning options they offer.  The storage beds they offer don’t look anything like the name suggests, and is just as stylish as any of their other ranges.

Health Concerns For Computer Slaves

I’ve been working in front of computer for 8 hours a day – sometimes more, for the past few years. I realize that the monitor isn’t doing my eyes any good, but what can I do? Its my job! I got glasses a while back – specifically to relieve the glare from my monitor, but now I get a headache from the glasses on my nose.

I can wear sunglasses without a problem, but they don’t have those grip things on my nose. Oh well, maybe I should’ve tried a different type of frame – maybe I will try to change that at a later stage…  I might even try ZenniOptical, as I hear they have affordable prescription glasses available.

These days there are so many jobs which require you to spend half your life in front of a computer monitor, that its not even funny to see so many people wearing eyeglasses.

Computer jobs also affect your back, i.e. the way you sit in front of your computer could seriously damage your back, neck and shoulders, and visibly affect your posture. I know that its a problem for me, and though I try to keep it in mind, I still catch myself sitting with my shoulders slumped forward. Slouching becomes such a habit, that trying to correct your posture may even be painful!!

I’ve seen some exercises in a local newspaper, which was so ridiculously hillarious – there’s no WAY that I would do that in the office, in front of my co-workers!!  Still, they had a point – excercise is extremely important, and could really help in correcting your posture, or keeping you from falling into a habit of slouching.

I also realize that there’s a horde more health concerns for the computer bound generation, but I hardly have the time and the space to write about it now… :)   I’ll have to do a sequel!!

Bingo!

Disney BingoTill today, I never knew that kids actually DO play Bingo! LoL. I only played it once, and that was at an old age home with my grandmother :D

I must admit that I was awfully shy about it, considering that I thought it was a game for old people!!
The coolest thing about it though, was that I actually won something!! Quite an ugly little portrait of something that was suppose to resemble the Mona Lisa, complete with a silky blue string to hang it on the wall with. I was still so chuffed with it though – having won at least SOMETHING! :)

If you would like to play bingo with your kids, or even grand kids, have a look at Disney Bingo, you can buy it from Amazon.com or Drugstore.com – I managed to find the game on Amazon for only $14.99!!! Its such a great way of spending time together as a family. This game offers a high-tech twist on an old favorite. Disney DVD Bingo lets kids learn numbers, colors, and matching skills with their favorite Disney characters and movie clips!!

For more info, check out the video below, or visit the Disney Bingo website!

Operation Immortality

Social-spark-315x235

I found something for the gamers among you, here’s a new adventure to poke at.  You can sign up on the website of  Operation Immortality, and get to play the trial version of the game for free!  Operation Immortality: Leave your mark. Save Humanity. is currently having a huge promotion,  you can scratch around on their website, which is quite impressive, and read messages from other registered users.

The theme of the message being your life motto, hence “Leave your mark, save humanity”.  You can go and check out my message as well if you’d like – its ID is 756.

I found the “humanity’s greatest achievements” section on the website extremely fascinating – there are polls where you can vote for the best movie, best actor, best art work ever etc.

They’re also running a competition to have your DNA sent into space.  Now I know this isn’t everyone’s dream, and personally I dont see much point in it, but I guess there are people who’d find this appealing?

You can also leave your own message of your life motto on there once you’ve registered.  Please feel free to tell me what you think of the game – I haven’t tried it out yet so I’m keen to hear feedback!!

Web Hosting For Dummies

Someone recently asked about webhosting. Not in those words though, but rather something along the lines of “how do you get a plain .com” blog instead of the blogspot behind your blog name. I tried to explain by telling him about hosting on your own domain, and how it all works, but it was kind of useless.

I’ve since tried to make it a bit simpler to explain to myself in plain terms exactly what ‘hosting’ means – trying to think what I would use if I had to give a comparison to something which is more commonly known.

Wiktionary defines it like this: “The service of hosting a site on the Internet making it viewable for other users on the net”

However, if you compare it like this, maybe it will make more sense: Blogspot accounts are free, because the main domain name, being www.blogspot.com has already been bought – however, they choose to give people free accounts, for whatever reason they have. Comparing this to market is the best I can do. You don’t pay for the space you use, but at the same time the space you’re using is very high quality. For some people this could work perfect. They don’t intend upgrading, ever. The cons of hosting with a free server such as Blogspot is that your website address might be a little bit difficult to remember if you intend to attract customers for that matter.

If you can run a successful business (or blog) from your free market space (or blogspot blog), you might want to consider upgrading. See this as moving into an office park, or maybe even a mall. This sounds wonderful, but you need to be able to justify the move. It doesn’t help you move to a mall if your income is so little that you’ll not even be able to pay the rent from your profit you make.

Its pretty much the same with webhosting in that sense. If you generate an income from your blog, that’s great, and if it could cover a proper .com domain (www.yourblog.com), and you still have a bit extra left, I believe that justifies it. However, if you want a .com domain name just for the fun of it, you’re going to be prepared to put cash into your hosting, without getting anything back – kind of like a hobby I suppose. This is still fine if you can afford it, but you need to understand your motivation for wanting to move before doing so. Also be sure that you are aware of the cost – there’s a registration fee, and also a yearly hosting fee. Be sure that you know what these are, and that you will be able to cover those. Its better to have free account which is hosted by a provider such as blogspot, and never move from there, than to have a .com domain, and only stay there a year, only to realize that you don’t want to pay for something that you can have for free in any case.

My reason for moving to a .com host is first of all, the free service that I was using before shutdown my blog, because they didn’t allow paid posts. And secondly, I make an income from my blog (however little it is) it still covers more than my hosting costs.

If you need webhosting advice, speak to a couple of different service providers, and make sure that you know about all the costs before making a decision. There are different types of packages available. Some give you more space (if you intend to host large files, such as images or video’s). For a normal blog you might not need as much space as a business would, so double check that you take the right package for your needs.

Webhosting Advice

Choosing a web host doesn’t have to be as tricky as it sounds. Whenever people hear the words web host they think they need a professional to tell them what to do. Whether you’re wanting a host for your personal website, blog, or even business, you can fairly easily find a good host online by just searching for one. There’s no need to pay an excessive amount of money. There are various web hosting articles on the internet where you can read up on some of the options you have.

“If you run a business online, you want to ensure that it can run 24/7 – or you will lose out on potential profits or worse, jeopardize your whole business. The fact that the internet has this amazing capability of being there to serve anyone at any time is probably why business owners started utilizing this incredible platform in the first place.

If you want a personal website that will advertise your portfolio or services, you wouldn’t want your potential client to see a huge error page when he or she tries to access the your website via the address you provided in your name card. This could portay you as someone who is cheap and unreliable, potentially destroying any chance of getting business at all.”

The trick is, to tell a good web host from a bad one, and for most people, that’s not very easy, hence they feel that they are compelled to seek the help of a professional. Before you pay hundreds of dollars for advice which you’re not even sure you can trust, make sure to read up enough about web hosting, so that you can make a well-informed decision before tying yourself to a 12/24 month contract of unreliable hosting.
