I’m going to try this! thanks!
This is a delicious chocolate cake recipe! My girlfriend made this for me the other night
She actually used Vanilla Yogurt instead of Milk, and they tasted AWESOME!
By the way, if you are looking for another resource to find a great chocolate cake recipe, my gf uses http://www.chocolatecakerecipex.com … It’s a great place to find a chocolate cake recipe with more details and options. Happy eating!
It will be very good. But I am pure vegetarian,so what i will use instead of egg?
Hi,
This is so cute and a fun way to make cake, thanks, I’ll remember it next time I have a cake craving…I feel one coming on now, lol.
Oh man…
For a second I thought the title was ‘Chocolate Milk’ and I thought something had gone terribly terribly wrong.
but nope you were making cake. Cake! haha.
Just doing some blog hopping. I LOVE the recipe! it*s genius. lol my boyfriend will be using that while im on trips.
Great blog!
Hi, looks good, will try it just now!
Wow! I just made this in a small bowl instead of the cup, and the result was a nicely tasting cake, that even had a nice shape from the bowl (and the oil made it easy to transfer). It was even better with a little whipped cream on it.
Thanks!
Great! But shouldn’t the Mug be the first ingredient?
the mug isn’t an ingredient, because you don’t eat it, but yes it should be on there somewhere so that people who are just scanning through can see what they need in order to make this.
Great recipe! Tastes pretty good!
cup cake. – Benjamin Koshkin
‘cup cake’ benjamin koshkin
RAD!!!!
^ clibarman… Stop nit-picking.
my friends and i are stoned eating the cakes now. they are awesome. and if we can make them anyone can.
you have made munchie time easier thank you
I make this w/o the egg. I use olive oil instead and
sometimes some yoghurt instead of milk or soy milk.
It is so fantastic!
fastest space cakes ever!
five minute…
cake?!
-’splodes-
i think you’ve just given me my new favorite recipe! thanks!
Got this a while back in a forwarded e-mail. It’s literally a cup cake
We tried it when we got the e-mail.. twice. Excellent. Tastes like real cake, although the middle was a bit hard. But I think we put it in too long or something
uh, clibarman, mug isn’t edible (-:
Wow – I’m trying this!
i tried this recipe, & much to my disliking, my mug cracked because of the heat of the cake. i will not be doing this again. =(
great!
managed to do this in 8 minutes – probably because I augmented it with a garnish of fresh raspberries, double cream and a sprig of mint.
can’t wait to get my daughter making it too! fun!
I tried it and it was horrible. I guess I must have done something wrong
Dude, this is genius!
WOW! I have a chocolate high after that cake. Thanks for the recipe.
Are you sure you meant tablespoon rather than dessert spoon? They look the same but dessert spoons are smaller. When I used a tablespoon, it didn’t fit in a standard mug, and the ratios must have been off, as it didn’t taste the best.
have to try, sures tastes good but..where is the chocolate?
I would never of thought of doing that, my 11yr old son is gonna love the idea of making chocolate cake all by him self, thanks for that………..
I would never have thought of trying this. It’s such a clever idea! Thanks for the post!
hold me, i’m afraid. =(
Wow, pretty simple recipe!
Do not use hot cocoa instead of cocoa powder for this. They are not the same thing.
I just tried this, totally awesome! What a perfect treat, thanks!
Sounds yum….cake flour, i assume would be similar to Self Raising flour. (never heard of cake flour in New Zealand) h well I’m gonna try this sometime this week
The recipie is ok but it needs frosting (I made a quick homemade batch and put it on my cake) so it wasn’t too bad but I think I will stick with oven baked cake.
mmmmmmmmmm
bookmarked for home tonite
THAT LOOKS…..EW. LOL. :p
hey i just made it and it worked. thanks for the recipe!
This micro-cooking tip proves to me that:
“You can have your cake and eat it too”
this shits delcious!
jk i didnt make it yet
Nice little contribution to American obesity
I love it! And it makes a pretty decent muffin/cake =)
This is sooo easy and totally indulges that chocolate craving. I used a large mug and had a very pretty and large cupcake on my hands…I wonder if I could turn this into a molten chocolate cake with a gooey center? Oh the possibilities!
Also, this would make a great dorm-warming gift. A nice fat mug filled with the dry ingredient mix wrapped with the recipe tied on. You could even include some teas/instant coffees/hot cocoas…anything mug related and comforting.
Anyway, what I mean to say is thank you for this recipe! It will treat me and my midnight snacking well.
Midnight snack time! It worked as promised and is yummy!
You know, it was pretty good for microwaved cake! It tastes better if you let it cool down a bit. The wife and I sat down with two glasses of Chocolate Silk and had a nice midnight snack. Thanks!
Unfortunately I may be having chocolate cake every night this week.
Cute mug
Couldn’t you squeeze a couple more ads in?
Arr. These sweet little cakes are too much for my own delightful treats. The muffin, is dead.
omg this is perfect for college!!!!!!!!!!!
I’m SO gonna try this when I get home from work… actually, we have a microwave in the office – I’m gonna try it here!
that is fucking genius dude
that is f*cking genius dude!
I love mixing muffins in a jug but I have found a microwavable muffin tray (but I had to cut it up to get it into my microwaves!) – that way I get 6 muffins from 1 egg!
Yummy!
IT IS DELICIOUS CAKE YOU MUST EAT IT
To Nathan Millar – cake flour is simply super fine flour. You can make it by double or triple sifting all purpose flour…or adding a tablespoon of cornstarch to each cup of all purpose flour.
Hi Nathan Miller from New Zealand. Cake flour is NOT the same as self rising flour. Cake flour is a type of flour that is made from a special wheat – a little “softer” than regular wheat so it makes better cakes and pastry. You can use regular all purpose flour in this recipe, but you may have to use a tablespoon or so less. Good luck!
nice, i like it.
Awesome. I hate cooking cakes, but I am going to have to try this
Thanks.
Would this work good with weed oil?
Thanks for the great recipe!
I’ve just made it and it came out quite tasty.
Great recepie! ^^
But I changed some things… I’m not a big fan of oil, so I’ve used butter instead. And I also used wholemeal flour, demerara sugar and light cocoa.
Delicious! ;]
GREAT RECIPE… I adapt it to vegan and more tasty, pretty good result:
Ingredients:
4 Tablespoons cake flour
4 Tablespoons Brown sugar
1,5 Tablespoons cocoa
0,5 Tablespoon cinnamon
1 Banana
3 Tablespoons soy milk
3 Tablespoons oil
1 Mug
Instructions:
Mix flour, sugar and cocoa
Smash the banana in a plate with a fork
Spoon in the smashed banana
Pour in soy milk and oil, and mix well
Put in microwave for 3 minutes on maximum power (1000watt)
Wait until it stops rising and sets in the mug
Tip contents out of mug onto saucer and enjoy
spoon some frosting on top of the batter BEFORE you nuke it and it is like a lava cake soooo yummy!
the cake is a lie!
Noooo! I can’t know about this! I will be eating cake all the time! This is great.
yuck!! looks like poop in a cup
Hahaha, I use to do this all the time late at night while the rents were asleep when I was like 6 years old!
WOW! Now, how about a recipe for white cake the same way????? I really like white better than chocolate, but my skills are very limited!!!
I love this <3!~
This looks like a great recipe to make with kids! I’m definitely going to try it. Thanks! Stumbled you.
Holy crap this is good! I think I am going to do this more often. And I wasn’t exactly thinking it would be. Thank you!!!
Sweet Allah
I think this alone could triple the American obesity rate.
It looks delicious… o_o
Tested this last night, it works well.
Initially I was sceptical about everything fitting in a mug and assumed merkans table spoon was a UK desert spoon, upon realising my mix was waaaay too runny I started adding another spoon of flour/sugar/chocolate powder until the mug was more full and a better consistancy was reached, however forward planning meant I put the mug in a plastioc bowl… And foresight appears to be 20/20 as it overflowed and filled the bowl too. Mix was drier (I neglected to add extra milk and oil) but was a very edible consistency of cake.
I started with Neskuik milkshake powder as I couldn’t find our cocoa then my wife with her extra sensory perception cupboard divination skills located our bournville dark cocoa which when upgraded from stupid plastic “table spoon” measuring device (version 2.0, larger rounded bottom mug made a steam pudding style sponge “stodgy” comes to mind with the mix being a bit on the wet side) to proper old school traditional “Scottish Granny” inherited table spoon the mix made in a 5″ diameter straight sided soup bowl (v3.0) yielded an impressive cake (tipped it out onto a plate then turned it over – this gives it a nice flat top) that looked good enough to fire on some glaze made from cocoa icing sugar and water then cut in half and fill with butter icing with cocoa… Nutella chocolate spread would be a quick option too.
The end result looked so presentable that a candle on top would make them perfect individual birthday cakes (a bit like a large flat topped muffin)
I made this, exactly as the recipe states, and it came out very dense and eggy.
Any way I can fix this? It was delicious, just not very “cakey.”
real fun and very cute. definetely gona try this one.
Is the happy pig cup intentional?
I tried this.. I have two young boys at home. and they are ALWAYS wanting snacks.. IT WORKS!! I used a bowl.. and when I tipped it out of the bowl.. its in a nice little round cake shape! I let it cool, and we put whipped cream all over it, got three forks, and…DUG IN!!! Im delighted that it took all of 5 minutes! And the cleanup took oh… about TWO!! LOL. LOVE IT LOVE IT! Thank you… its few recipes that I can make well… this ones a keeper! It also will come in handy for the last minute birthdays… housewarming gift, get well cake… the possibilities are endless!!
This thing came out the size of my forearm!
with the addition of a mars bar, i have discovered a superior munchie suppressant
Yeah it works.
I already make one like 6 months ago or something when I saw something similiar in a brazilian blog. At first I though the mug would crack or something but it actually could handle the heat. And yeah it tastes good.
OH MY GOD, IT WORKS.
You have just changed my afternoons at work FOR LIFE… LOL
Thank you.
Hugs from Brazil.
I absolutely love chocolate cake. This looks delicious.
WONDERFULL!!!
thank you so much, this is WOW
im sorry to say that i am very disapointed in this recipe it took me longer time because i had to make my own cake flour and maybe homemade cake flour isnt as good or something or maybe i did something wrong but everything was looking good until i tasted it. Terrible, hopefully it works for others but it did not for me. I am also now feeling sick to my stomach after eating it. Hope you have better luck with yours than i did.
Wow.. this looks like a recipe straight from HELL! What and where does the THREE teaspoons of OIL go?!?!?! Straight to the heart to block any chance of avoiding a heart attack!
There should be a health warning attached to this blog as it will eventually cause mass public health hazzard and send people to their graves at the earliest!
This is nothing but PURE POISON, guess if you add a bottle of Coke to drink along.. then death should be instant!
I made it today and it’s very good! ^^
I just made this and the taste leaves something to be desired and the consistency is like pencil eraser. To be fair my microwave doesn’t have a turntable and I used olive oil rather than vegetable.
Disappointing overall.
I just made it!! It tastes great! and it is impressive to see it cook through so fast. My brother was astonished
I can’t wait to show it to my mom!!
Thanks!! Very cool and rich!
Worked great, try it with chocolate chips
if you don’t have any cake flour handy, use 3 1/2 tbsp of flour and 1/2 tbsp corn starch
tastes like one of those kids frozen dinner brownies…but much more fun! will totally make this with my kid sister (and kids…one day)
Oh this is pretty cool! I don’t think I measured properly though, since it was a bit dry, and I probably over mixed it since it was a little tough, but it was still good when I had it with milk!
As to those who were talking about cake flour… The real difference between cake flour and other flours (such as all purpose or bread flour) lies primarily in the protein content, though it is also finer than the others. Cake flour has less protein in it so that it doesn’t create as much gluten which results in lighter, fluffier cakes. However all-purpose flour mixed with cornstarch can be used as a substitute in a pinch. ;D
Are you suppose to use UNSWEETENED cocoa? Cause I tried it and it was BAD :[
Wow, I never expected so many comments on this post! Thank you all for trying this recipe!!
I have enjoyed all the feedback – great to hear that the majority of you liked it. For those who didn’t get such a good result, note that cake flour is different from all purpose flour and self raising flour. I don’t know what the result will be when you use all purpose flour with some corn starch in it, so I wouldn’t recommend it, but you’re welcome to let me know if it worked for you.
Also, about the measurements, for interest sake, a tablespoon as refered to in the recipe, is assumed to be 12,5ml. Also, the cocoa is definitely unsweetened cocoa – I think it might be a bit too sweet with sweetened cocoa AND sugar.
Your type/size of microwave will have a huge effect on how your choclate muffin/cake turns out. It would definitely have to have a turn table. The microwave’s power will also have an effect, but I’m not sure what its suppose to be unfortunately.
And lastly, I’ve tried some variations of this recipe. I’ve added a bit of baking powder so make it a bit more fluffy, and dark chocolate bits make it nice and moist.
I might try the frosting on top of the dough mixture prior to cooking as Jacquie suggested.
Mmm… this is especially nice in the freezing cold winter weather we’re having in South Africa at the moment!
The cake is a lie. It’s more like Cup-O-Turd.
Eating it as we speak. For 3 minutes, it’s pretty amazing. Definitely should be eaten with cream though, which I’ve run out of.
If you’re in the UK, a tablespoon is the same as 2 teaspoons. I would have thought it’s the same in the States.
Also, I used plain flour instead of cake flour and it turned out perfectly. I added a dash of baking powder just in case.
And, I microwaves it for 3 minutes in only an 800Watt micro with good results.
Like I said, needs to be eaten with cream. But a chocolate sauce would be better. Maybe by mixing some sugar, cocoa and hot water, pouring it over the mix just before microwaving. Like a self-saucing chocolate pudding. Worth a try.
This recipe have too much oil, 2 Tablespoons it’s good
Thanks
LOLOMGZ I’ve tried this with blue berry cupcakes, they turned green when their done and taste funny.
this cake is pretty good. I’ll be a freshman in college next year and I can really see myself making this at 2 A.M. during exams. the only thing I would change would be to add some vanilla and chocolate chips, and increase the cocoa and surgar. awsome job!
Here is a modified recipe I developed today upon experimenting
) I wanted a fluffy cake, but I didn’t have cake flour…and because I had no cocoa, I decided to use ginger and cinnamon. For a one-time experiment, I think it came out lovely!
Ingredients:
4 Tablespoons all-purpose flour
3 Tablespoons sugar
1 Teaspoon spice (cinnamon, ginger, whatever you like. Add more/less if you want!)
1/8 Teaspoon baking powder
1 Egg white
3 Tablespoons milk (or soy milk)
2 Tablespoons vegetable oil
1/4 Teaspoon vanilla extract
1 Microwave-safe bowl or mug
Instructions:
Mix flour, sugar, spice and baking powder
Mix in egg white
Pour in milk, oil and vanilla, and mix well
Put in microwave for 2.5-3 minutes on maximum power (1000 watt)
Wait until it stops rising and sets in the bowl/mug
Pictures: http://dook.us/~coolguy/cake/
Delicious and so easy! Thanks for the recipe. For those of you who are having difficulty, substituting 3 tablespoons plus 1 1/2 (one and one half) teaspoons of all-purpose flour in place of the 4 tablespoons of cake flour worked fine for me (the conversion is 1 cup minus 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour for every 1 cup of cake flour).
It’s a good start, but too much egg. Also, add a tiny pinch of salt.
Ok that was not good and nothing that resembles a baked cake. Got a good laugh though. If this adds to American obesity…god people get some taste.
But really, i just tried this because i was bored and had the stuff.
the cake is a lie…
Fantastic! This will be great for my cake cravings.
Would this work with cake or brownie mix?
I am in love with this recipe!!!
I’m wondering if the people who had negative results are all outside South Africa and therefore have different products and measurements etc available???
I agree with the 2T oil though … 3T made my first attempt taste a tiny bit oily.
Its on the microwave right now, hope it turns out good, lets see if my brother likes it!
Ha!! That’s awesome! And it tastes pretty good too.
Looks like fun, I will have to get cake flower and try it.
Thanks for sharing it!
Have a FANTASTIC Day!
Kim Parsley
I just have regular flour at home, I was thinking of like 1/4 of a teaspoon of baking powder to make it rise. Will it work you think?
Made two of these just now for myself and a friend to eat with cold milk….ohmygawd! Heaven in a dish! I also made a tiny bit of chocolate frosting to pour over the top (cause if I’m going to have cake, I might as well have it the way I like it!) it truly is wonderful! Thank you for this wonderful break in the day!
I just made this( I didnt eat the whole thing because of all the fat in it), and I loved it, haha. I never knew I could make cake this simple. I used Hot Chocolate mix as my Cocoa. Next time I make this, I think I will use the whole packet of hot chocolate mix, and less sugar, but either way good recipe for a quick cup cake
Haha. The only thing I dislike is the three table spoons of oil! Thats… 42 grams of fat for that little cake =O
Is there a way to make it with out so much fat? Would it work with just a table spoon of oil?
Just one word for this – FANTASTIC
Wow! This was lovely, I added a bit of vanilla extract and not so much sugar.. mmmm Got some pictures
http://www.flickr.com/photos/tripplehelix/sets/72157606107129600/
OK. I’ve GOT to try this. Right now!
No eggs! Gaaah. OK. TOMORROW I’m gonna try this
Be afraid. be very Afraid.

This is awesome! Thx, going to try it!
I actually tried making microwave-cupcakes with special microwave-safe silicone pans. The bread was soft and fluffy, however I can’t stand the taste and texture. Too moist for me (the wrong kind of moist)
I tried it, it became very spongy and a rubbery texture, taste was OK though.
Alright, for everyone complaining about the recipe being off, it would seem that we all learned an important lesson today. UK tablespoon does not equal US tablespoon. In the UK a tablespoon is 12.5 mL while in the US it is 15 mL. However, even those numbers are contested depending on where you get your information. That’s going to make a difference in the final product. Now, I haven’t tried this yet myself, but it should work out as follows (following Dizzy Dee’s 12.5 mL):
50 mL cake flour
50 mL sugar
25 mL cocoa
1 Egg
37.5 mL milk
37.5 mL oil
ok so don’t use chocolate milk mix
nasty
good needs powdered sugar on top but is delisious
ha ha 2 girls 1 cup ha ha
OK. I’m sold. It works, and tastes even better than I expected too. I used 2 tbs of olive oil, and set the microwave (and old 750W model) to 3 and a half minutes.
Came out gorgeous, it did.
hey, good one. let us try. thanks in advance for nice recipe….
“Special” Chocolate Cakes! Awesome!
Tried this and it came out dry. We had to have a drink after every bite. Have a 1000 watt microwave, used measuring spoons for all ingredients. Any suggestions?
I only realized this was problem when some posters said it was too oily.
That is fantastic! Easy and delicious. I recommend to add coconut
I’ve made it today and I and my wife enjoyed this cake. It wasn’t very “caky”, but it was delicious! Made it the same as in recipe except plain flour instead of cake flour and had to set my microwave to 3:40, because its highest power is 850 watt.
People!!
THIS IS NOT A JOKE, IT WORKS! =D
I tried it at home, it came out great, even better looking the one pictured on this page. I just used a bigger bowl.
Everyone should try it!
Thanks for the recipe!
Don’t have cake flour? just use any flour and natron
why not ad some chocolate pieces?
OMG!
i’m going to remember this for college=D
it’ll be a convenient way to make a snack=]
can’t believe it. have to do it, today!
I’mma try this tomorrow.
Bracing for epic.
Oh Lawdz, I’mma try dis tonite.
BRACING FOR EPIC…
wow, lovely. and working! a bit crispy after some time, but fun.
I just made this wonderfull cake! It was really fast and I really like it! it’s fluffy and sweet! I really love it! Thanks!
I just tried this. I used a 10 oz coffee mug. A taller, mine was just under 4″ tall, taller mug would have been better or a bowl. It did run over just a bit. The runover was tasty.
This cake would be great for a special, quick dessert, easily be shared by two, and no tempting leftovers. I will try this again. Thanks, I liked it.
I have further modified my version (posted above) and ended up with a much better looking cake than before. This was likely due to replacing 1 tbs of oil with unsweetened applesauce. All measurements are US measurements:
Jello 5-Minute Cake
Ingredients:
4 Tablespoons all-purpose flour
3 Tablespoons sugar
1 Teaspoon sugar-free jello powder, any flavor
1/8 Teaspoon baking powder
1 Egg white
3 Tablespoons milk (or soy milk)
1 Tablespoon vegetable oil
1 Heaping tablespoon unsweetened applesauce
1/4 Teaspoon vanilla extract
1 Microwave-safe bowl or mug
Instructions:
Mix flour, sugar, jello and baking powder
Mix in egg white
Pour in milk, oil, applesauce and vanilla, and mix well
Put in microwave for 2.5 minutes (add 30 sec if necessary) on maximum power
Wait until it stops rising and sets in the bowl/mug
More photos: http://dook.us/~coolguy/cake/
What a delight! ‘Twas delicious! Mmm yes. Quite. Is it raining again?
YUM! and easy, tastes great with strawberry jam and cream
And mum wont even notice…
I might try this, although it doesn’t look that great to me. I love baking and I love chocolate cake and the ratios in that recipe look totally warped and off to me. Looks like too much sugar. Looks like too much egg (although what can you do?) I’d think that much egg would dry it out considerably. But then it does have a load of oil and milk for the amount of flour used. I donno. Not convinced, but I’ve got a serious chocolate craving going on and the only chocolate I have is cocoa powder, and this seems like a good quick fix if it turns out well. I will return when I have tried it. =)
… it’s not as dry as I thought it would be. I only used half the egg, and I added a pinch of salt & vanilla extract. I also used 3.4 tbls of sugar because 4 seems like way too much. It’s not that good. It has a REALLY weird taste to it. It is fixing my chocolate craving but this is the worst chocolate cake I’ve had. There’s just this certain flavor to it that I can’t put my finger on. When it was in the microwave it smelled like popcorn. Or cigars. Sorry.
Hi, everyone! I’ve been cooking & baking all sorts of things for more than 15 years, so perhaps I can add weight to the argument for this recipe. I’m in the U.K. and use exactly the same amount stated. The size of egg is also important here. Instead of large size eggs as I would have used in baking normal cakes, a medium one was used in this experiment. To conceal the eggy smell I have also put four drops of good vanila extract (the quality of which matters). This, on top of cocoa (the bitter, real kind, and again, the quality counts), gives the cake a lovely, welcoming aroma. Here, just like baking real cakes, the size and depth of the container is crucial. You have to know your heating appliance (oven or microwave) very well to obtain good results. I used a medium-small glass bowl, a 900W micrwave, and the result is good. Considering that it is a microwaved cake made within 10 minutes (incl. preparation & measurement), I have nothing to complain about. By the way, I used melted butter (never use any other type of grease when I bake) and golden caster sugar. White, refined sugar is not suitable for cakes. The cake I got was a small dome-shape dark chocolate cake, with just the right degree of sweetness. I cut it into six portions, each slice perfect to go with an espresso (or even cappuccino) for an elevenses or afternoon tea.
tried it. hey, it isn’t the perfect cake, but considering it took 5 minutes and used ingredients i already had in my cupboard, it was rather good – with some whipped cream! and really fun to try. thanks.
absolutely brilliant. thanks
I didn’t have much oil, I used something like one tablespoon – and my microwave is old so there is no such power like 1000W, just 800W max…
BUT I AM SPEECHLESS. THAT WAS GREAT – IT IS AMAZING THAT MAKING SOMETHING THAT GOOD TAKE ONLY 5 MINUTES. And, on top of that, ingredients are in almost every kitchen. It’s easy,so everybody can make it. 11/10!
Mankind should be grateful for you ;]
I made it and it was yumm-ay!
duuude. i just made this & i put a circle of fresh raspberries around it, and a scoop of chocolate ice cream on the side.
friggen delicious.
mucho gracias<3
@ coolguy;
looking at the photos of your spice cake,
we have that same plate / dish set but in red.
xD
Just tried this, but didn’t have any normal cocoa so used mint flavour hot chocolate powder instead. Yummy! Although it smelt a bit odd while it was cooking.
Changed my mind, after the first few bites it taste odd… will try again with normal cocoa!
cake flour makes a difference.
i used all purpose and it is dense in a bad way.
otherwise a good cake.
very nice cake..i tried to make it,very tasty
This is perfect for a pregnant woman! I’m going to be piling on the baby-weight!
Love this idea. Sent it to my single sons. Since I am allergic to wheat, I will try this with my alternative flours. It will be nice to have this treat again! Many thanks.
GOOD LORD.
I nearly burnt the kitchen doing this! Because I used a larger mug I could not see if it had risen so ended up leaving it in there too long!!
Wow that is amazing! Thanks for sharing.
I tried it with 000 flour (we use it to make bread) and some cinnamon. I couldn’t wait and I ate it hot, now I feel sick but my cake was deliciouos xD
Thanks for the recipe, it’s the perfect 3 AM recipe
We tried it, used self raising flour, followed directions fairly closely and it was awesome. Stumbled it, made it, 8 it, yum. 3 kids loved it. Thanks Dizzy Dee, your invention rocks…
I will try the original recipe, and all variations.
What a nice thing for those of us who make single serving meals for two.
This is just awesome! I’ll try it a little later when I get overtired XD
We made the cake and it was delicous and we made it more than once
wow just tried this and its epic tasty! thanks for the recipe my friend!
PEace!
I have celiac disease, so I tried it with a mix of gluten free flours, very good. great for when you want a quick chocolate dessert.
For anyone who is wondering here are the nutrition facts (I’m a nutrition minor so I was compelled after making this to figure it out) They are for if you use Canola Oil and if you use Skim Milk.

I did it today with alternate flours. For all you gluten free folks, you don’t have to skip this one!! Substitute the 4 Tbsp of wheat flour with 1 Tbsp each of quinoa, soy, white rice and potato starch. It works and is a real treat. I loved it and felt quite decadent with my own dessert, finally! LOVE IT!!! The variations are endless. Up until now I just do without. Too much trouble making a big cake just for me. (My husband doesn’t enjoy chocolate cake and definitely not the ‘fake stuff’, as he calls it!) Now I can truly have my cake and eat it too without fear of a reaction. I will also take it to dinners, etc, so I can enjoy dessert along with everyone else. Thanks so much!
I’m gonna try this at home thanks for sharing this recipes

Does any make a successful cake using this way. I do. But taste terrible!!!!!!!!!
This was so much fun…thankyou!! The children have enjoyed making their very own mugcake on this cold Winter’s afternoon! Very delicious too!
OMG! I could not believe it was possible but Voila! Cake in 5!
I followed someone else’s lead & put mine in a bowl. Took it out & placed on a plate upside down & it was looked so nice.
Cake was very dense and I had no expectations so I was very happy.
Next time… (yes, there will be a next time) I will do what another said & experiment with some icing on the cake before it is cooked.
I have never used cake floor so I googled for a substitute & found this one that got 5 stars from everyone that reviewed it… Enjoy… Taylor 35

Cake Flour Substitute Recipe #87689
by Lennie
2 min | 2 min prep
2 cups
1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 cup cornstarch
To make two cups of cake-and-pastry flour (cake flour), combine 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour with 1/4 cup cornstarch; proceed with your recipe.
The easiest way to do this substitution is to put 2 tbsp of cornstarch in the bottom of a 1-cup measuring cup, then fill the cup as usual with all-purpose flour and level top. Repeat process to get your two cups.
If you only need 1/2 cup of cake flour, put 1 tbsp cornstarch in bottom of 1/2 cup measuring cup, then fill and level as above.
You are my hero.
Made it. WAY too oily.
3tbls of oil is too much. Pretty disgusting even.
Also, it needs some vanilla.
Mmmm, I just made this. It turned out wonderful! It’s great. I made two small changes, I used soy milk instead of milk and for extra fun I mixed in chocolate chips! Just mix them in while you’re mixing in the dry ingredients.
Five stars.
Hi!
Does anybody have a vanilla, white, or yellow recipe for this? If so, please e-mail it to me at kmsc4@sbcglobal.net
Thanks!
I just tried this. It was a little tough, but I think I stirred it too much. The taste was a lot better than I expected, and the texture, though dense and slightly dry, was acceptable. You guys who are saying it’s terrible are either doing something incorrectly or you’re way too picky. It’s a microwave cake in a cup.
I think next time I’ll try mixing in a little cream instead of some of the oil and try to make it a bit more moist and tender.
Probably too much oil, as some people have said. Incidentally, vegetable oil in itself, if you don’t get fat from eating too much of it, is an unsaturated fat and isn’t believed to contribute to heart disease. If you want to do better, use a monounsaturated fat (only one I can think of at the moment is olive oil, but there are other, less flavorful ones). A monounsaturated fat is liquid at room temperature, but clouds up and begins to set in cold weather or in the fridge.
You could add mashed fruit, like banana, to replace some of the oil if you like. I might try that–sounds good.
Thanks for a fun recipe.
Cindy
Just made this a few minutes ago. The texture was a bit tough and rubbery (maybe I had the exact measurements off a bit), but the taste is AWESOME! A nice warm treat when you’re too tired too cook anything more involved, or for dorm-dwellers.
Just made this cake, and i used exra virgin olive oil, along with self raising flour, milo instead of cocoa and it was delicious! Thank for the recipe!!!
This recipe is awesome!
The first time I made this – with 1 tsp baking powder – it was wonderful. Second time with self raising flour a bit rubbery? Now keen to make a non chocolate version. Does anyone know whether I will need to increase flour if I omit cocoa?
I made this using our standard NZ Tablespoon (tbspn)which is 15mls and just used self raising flour. I used 2 tbspn cream instead of the oil and 4 tbspn of milk and halved the sugar. Next time I will be using vanilla extract as chocolate with out vanilla is just too naked. I cooked it in a pyrex 2 cup jug and microwaved it for 2.40 min as my microwave is 1200 watts. I have a diabetic sister coming over for tea tonight so I will be making it with apple puree and a couple of those disgusting artifical sweetners tablets. For a five minute cake it was pretty good although I will be sieving dry ingredients before mixing.
Just made this. Used self raising flour instead of cake flour and butter instead of oil. It was very tasty, thanks for sharing!
This is such a cute idea for us lazy folk haha…I am definitely going to try this next time I babysit!
Can someone please tell me what I did wrong!! After two attempts, a burnt cake and and finally ending up with rubbery pretty afwul cakes im left wondering what i did wrong. The burnt one was contriubted to the microwave time: 3 minutes as instructed! After cutting the time back to 2 minutes they tasted horrible.
Any suggestions?
Thanx
Effing brilliant. NOW how am I supposed to stay on my diet, knowing that single servings of hot, fresh cake are only a few simple ingredients and five minutes away?
…and does have a recipe for 2.5 minute frosting?
“does anyone have” is what I meant to type… see, my blood sugar must be low! Time for another cup of cake!
absolute genius. this has changed my life forever!
Would this work if you use a box cake mix instead?
-Zorron
Here’s a more brownie-like, simpler/faster recipe:
4 T. flour
4 T. sugar
2 T. cocoa
2 T. oil
2 T. water
Cook for 1 minute. A little longer if your microwave sucks.
Perfect! My obesity rate is going to increase (as well)!

this was the first thing i thought of.
Poll time – what elevation/altitude is everyone at? If you’re like a mile high, need to add more flour and/or reduce the oil and sweetener. Also, are you in a humid or arid location? These things do matter… if this recipe did or did not work for you, do you mind indicating your elevation and humidity? Thanks!
KEMRTB, have you ever tried the gluten-free cake mix one can buy? There are mixes in existance, and they aren’t too expensive – found it at our local supermarket too. Tastes pretty good, although texture is closer to a brownie.
I hate it!!!!
I used my denture mug, and it cracked in the toaster oven.
Stupid. What ever happened to good old fashioned baking. My wife Ethel is probably turning over in her grave cause I tried this stupid thing. I can’t find my dentures now that my mug broke. I tried the stupid cake and tasted okay, but it ended up hard as plastic in the middle. I about cut my gums trying to take a bite. Had to throw it away, good for nothing. Stupid.
You young ones have a good day then.
Stupid.
made it then made vanilla (substitute 2 coco powder for mor cake flour and add in 1tsp of vanilla extract) and lemon ( same as vanilla exept substitute 3 tbsp of oil for lemon juice and added lemon extract for vannila) =) thanks!
I’ve sat and read all the comments regarding this 5 min. cake, and will definitely give it a try, and see if I want to make any adjustments or not. I love baking and this would sure make a nice small dessert. I think my granddaughter in college will like it. Oh, the aroma going through the dorm halls!!!!!!!
I tried this and it was pretty damn good, considering the minimal time invested. I did make some alterations to the recipe: I cut the oil down to 2 tbsp. instead of 3 and to the dry ingredients I added 1/8 tsp. baking powder. It came out a little dense, but it was still very tasty.
I made this for my sister who is diabetic and I used one whole cooked pureed apple and two tablets of sactabs. No oil or cream and a little more milk and she loved it
i just wanna make sure everyone’s aware: the 5th picture looks like someone pooped in a cup.
but apparently it tastes good, so who cares, right?
Oh yeah, I made one of these before you were even born …
This is actually pretty good. It’s a tad dry, but the texture actually goes well with it. I made mine in a bowl. It’s a hit here, I’m definitely making it again, maybe even try a few different types!
Fabulous!
For a 5 minute cake in a mug it tasted quite good although I would pass the egg through a sieve before adding it to avoid the eggy smell next time. I also added a bit of frosting I had in the fridge and my boys LOVED it!
Ugh, I tried to adapt this into a white cake recipe since I didn’t have any cocoa powder on hand… The cake did not have a good smell, and I took 1 bite and then threw the rest away.
I have a 1,000 watt oven, and I microwaved it for exactly 3 minutes…Next time I try this, I will make sure I add cocoa powder.
Just tried it, must of screwed it up though :/
I’ve got chocolate sponge, whether it’s the edible or the cleaning type I don’t know… I blame the egg tbh
Will try again though
*fingers crossed*
I make something similar for my low carb diet, which may appeal to others who don’t want to use flour. I’d characterize it as more of a muffin than a cake.
1/4 cup flax meal
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
1 egg
1 packet Splenda
1 teaspoon butter
Microwave for 1 minute or so (assuming 1000 watts)
I usually add cinnamon (2 tsp) as well, and I put butter on it after cooking. But cocoa might be nice too.
You can mix up a large batch of dry ingredients ahead of time and store for a ready-to-use muffin mix.
LOVE the recipe! it*s genius
I LOVE THIS….I just made it and didn’t have any cocoa so I did one extra sugar and one extra flour. I used chocolate milk instead of regular milk and it was actually VERY GOOD.
I think those that are burning it really need to look into purchasing a new microwave. They were not meant to last for ever. That is why microwaves are cheap!
http://claylee.thecenturytreereader.com
It´s cool, does not taste sooooooo good, but it´s a nice idea!
just great!
Yummy, I will try it …thanks for posting
Interested on a link exchange ?
They sell this (microwaveable cake in a mug) in Japan. They even come in different flavors, not just chocolate! The packet comes with all of the dry ingredients. I think it was just add milk and an egg since I don’t remember using oil, but don’t hold me to that.
5 minutes? But I want my cake now!!!!!!
awesome must make before mom gets home….
Oh my gosh, this is GENIUS! Not to mention, absolutely delicious! After I tried it, I also put some french vanilla ice cream and chocolate syrup with the cake in the mug, which tastes better than something so easy should ^^.
i made some… not the best but indeed very good. next time i will not use such a big egg and maybe add more milk. t was too rough and chewy.
I just made this cake TWICE! and it came out really RUBBERY almost like ricecake consistency. and i’m asian so i know what ricecake texture is like( : but it still tasted really good. does anyone know what i did wrong? BTW i used regular flour instead of ‘cake flour’ does that make a difference? ( : haha
This is awsome! I actually used an ice cream bowl instead of the mug and the results were amazing! It was quick and easy and the clean up…oh so fast! My little ones love it. They’re already making plans for me to put it inside of the lunch boxes when school starts! Thanks!
So I tried it…it just tastes like egg and feels like a sponge….it’s pretty flavorless in fact….might be good if you put PB in it before you cooked it maybe..
Nooo! Don’t do it! The Cake is a lie!
But seriously. This recipe is Epic+Win. Me and my friend just finished eating some. Makes me wish I had a microwave of my own
Major Kudos.
This works great! I have made it twice now and no problems. Thanks so much for this~ next I am going to try and add caramel in the middle ^^
Thanks for the recipe. I tried it and ended up with a massive chocolate cookie by overbaking it.
Good recipe though. I’m sure my second attempt will turn out better.
So I tried making the cake. Changed a few ingridiends due to lack of them in my home.
But turned out quite fine. Vanilla sauce to it and yum!
that seems like a lot of sugar…
The cake looks deelish, but, am I the only one who thinks the mug is fantastic also?
Happiest pigs i’ve ever seen
Gonna go try making the cake right now
I just made this and it was really nice! I was expecting it to be a total disaster (like most of the things I cook!) But it was really good, looked, smelled and tasted like cake! It was a little on the dry side, but a little chocolate sauce saw to that. Thank you for this recipe, I’ll certainly be making it again!
And, huge success, tastes really great, and took no more than 5 minutes to make.
Now I understand why the pigs are smiling
im from slovenia ;; i like to taste new things…
i have a 600+ but not 1000W Microvawe and i baked for 3
minutes ;; IM not a GURME CHEFF but maybe it needs some more
time ( low power) ….. I LIKE IT
it is the freakin chocholate egg …. MANY THANKS for
the IDEA …. THUMBS Up
This is cool!!
just use pancake batter! do it all the time!
I just used an individual-sized Pyrex bowl to bake it in. :3
I also added 1/4 tsp more sugar and 1/2 tsp more milk, and after I turned it out of the bowl I cooked it for another minute, divided into two sessions.
It was delicious, I put powdered sugar on it and it was perfect. <#
thx, tasty.
i suggest adding a pinch of salt to boost the flavor a bit.
for those inquiring about all purpose vs cake flour- cake flour has almost half the gluten of all purpose, if you’re results are rubbery, you’ve got too much protein in your flour! also, due to the finer texture of cake flour, it’s not a 1 to 1 equivalence.
Wow a sugar hit as well with 4 tablesppons of sugar in such a small amount of actual cake mix!!!!
good recipe thnx !!!
i did it just now but instead of cocoa i used some vanilla extract… yummy!!! taste GREAT!!
okay, i have a friend whose allerigic to chocolate. so i decided to alter the recipe for her.
5 Tablespoons cake flour
4.5-5 Tablespoons sugar
1 Egg
1 tablespoon vanilla
3 Tablespoons milk
3 Tablespoons oil
add the vanilla after the egg, with the milk and oil.
Wow, this is so cool! I’ve definitely got to give this a try.
Excellent cake — not the tastiest I’ve *ever* eaten but hard to ask for more from a recipe this easy and fast! I reduced the oil by 1 tablespoon and it still worked out just fine. I also made it in a bowl instead of a cup.
I’m thinking of perhaps trying to add some Vanilla or Almond flavor next time I make this. Could even perhaps just leave out the chocolate and make a vanilla cake at some point.
maaaaa!
i’m hanging.
great job
I agree with the person who said it came out looking like a turd.
Mine is now in the trash where it belongs.
FIRST!
lol
This shits looks like true shits :/ Bleee
cool
greets from germany
This is absolutely brilliant, I’ll give it a try tonight
That was…interesting.
In wouldn’t use so much cocoa next time! Too chocolate[y]!
GREAT! next time i get really high and have the munchies ill just make this shit. THANKS!
sounds like this is a real “cup”cake
Looks like about a 1:9 to 1:10 fail:win ratio… Mostly worked for me.
Didn’t use a big enough mug, but by the end of the 3 minutes, the runny glop solidified enough to slice cleanly off the outside of the cup. Whee. Not a perfect cake, but still handily beat any prepackaged cake mix I’ve ever tried. No cake flour was on hand, so I used a touch less than 1/4 cup all-purpose (Canadian/hard-wheat) flour and 1.5 tsp cornstarch. Both flour and sugar were converted from (4 tbsp)s to (1/4 cup)s, because I hadn’t read the replies about UK vs. US tablespoons. I used canola oil (instead of the olive oil many people seem to favor), as I find it more flavorless than olive oil for sweet items.
So: Wrong container size, wrong flour, wrong system of measurement, and IT STILL WORKED. Put some ice cream on top and was very happy.
“White” variant might be a little trickier…proportionally, that’s a fair amount of cocoa, which would make the whole thing runnier if it was simply dropped…
Useful info for international flour equivalences:

What a great way to have cake and not a huge whole piece.
What kind of oil?
Hi I love baking. I had to plan this huge party last week and the chocolate cakes were not ready so Me and my friend shira whipped up a few dozen or so cakes for the party and we had people asking for the recipe and other people asking how we made a wonderfull cake in so little yime….. WE LOVE your cake its rad:)
I’m from Europe, tried it with a normal European tablespoon, and plain flour – I just sifted it and added a touch of baking powder. I took a really big mug, so that nothing could run over. I also have only a 800w microwave.
Worked like a charm and tastes great!
This looks awesome!
well, i must say that anyone who considers that tasteless blob of sponge, cake , deserves to eat it
Holy 800 calories, Batman!
I just made this and it was sooo good! I was really surprised. I didn’t have cake flour so I used all-purpose, it probably would have been a little bit lighter with the cake flour. it was great anyway. a tip: just put a teeny smudge of nutella and/or some whipped cream on top of the cake to make it feel like a real cake, with icing, without all the work. ps, I only needed half to be totally full. what a great recipe!
HEAVENLY!
this is the best thing since cake…
it is ze cake of ze FUTURE!
My first attempt turned out so-so. I think I overcooked it, plus I only had all-purpose flour and I used the full 4 tablespoons. I definitely want to try again, though!
Not bad, not bad at all. Made a few modifications:
regular flour
powdered sugar (adds the startch normally found in cake flour)
splash vanilla
chnaged from 3 milk to 2 milk 1 coffee
teeny teeny pinch salt
drizzled it with ice cream caramel after it was done : ) great work
this recipe is fabulous, love it! i’ve just made it for the second time and improvised with some brown sugar over white in the cake, microwaved for 2:15 instead of 3 and tried an experimental chocolate-lemon-raspberry sauce that came out far better than i had expected. beautiful results!
thanks for the recipe
done and dusted, literally
perfect
this is really cool!!! =)
I just tried it out and I must say it was not so bad and gonna make it again very soon . Thanx
This cake is not good. I mean it’s edible, but I wouldn’t call it good at all. I tried it twice, following the directions verbatim once, and in two mugs a second time, and it didn’t help. I guess it kind of shows you get what you put your time into.
Just tried this with 10 tbs of cake mix instead of the sugar, cocoa and flour. Fantastic idea!
5th photo looks like a shit, hahahaha
A wide mouth mug works *way* better than a narrow mug. Pops right out of the mug onto a plate ready to be covered in whipped cream.
Add chopped walnuts, and boost the cocoa a bit to taste.
this came out really dry and hard. seems to be overcooked in my microwave. ooops microwave is 1200 watts. need to reduce cooking time.
i just made this for my house!!
The best!!
Thank you!!
This has been a hit and I can see why. Just made this for the first time and it came out perfectly. It’s so easy to make, just mix together, you think everything wont fit in a mug but once wet it compacts down so you can mix it easily. The cake rose beautifully, good fun to watch so kids will love it. The cake that came out of the microwave was soft and lovely, not at all sickly and sweet but lovely and chocolatey. I used Cadbury’s hot chocolate as I was out of Coaco but it tastes wonderful. Amazingly quick and a delight to eat, you’ll want to make this every time someone comes over, just for the fun of it LOL
I used applesauce instead of the oil,Worked fine
Here are two pics of them

THX for the recipe
I just made this for my boyfriend’s daughter’s first birthday, since we need a little tiny cake for her. it came out AWESOME, and she really liked it.
for anyone who this didn’t work for, heres how i did it: i used the 4 tbs of flour (didnt have cake flour, used regular). used 2 tbs soft butter instead of oil. mix the flour, cocoa and sugar together first, then creamed in the butter. beat the egg seperately until foamy and then beat it some more after adding the 3 tbs milk (like you would for scramble eggs) added a little pinch of salt. the key, i think is to make sure you DO NOT OVER MIX IT. that is what makes baked goods thick and rubbery, or too heavy. just carefully and slowly stir until *just mixed*. then i nuked it for only 2min and 15sec. also i cooked in a little bowl instead of a cup for the proper “birthday cake” shape, and make some white icing for it. she loved it and it was super cute.
thanks a lot for this one, im going to play around with it and see what else i can make.
hi, im faith 11 years old. i suddenly came onto this site when i was looking 4 a recipie for cake, all im gonna say is i REALLY rekon that aint gonna work plz email me soon if u have read this to show me u have read this thanks!- i think it looks hilariuosly fun but.. yer im just NOT gonna try it, no affence! hope u hab fun doin it though, im gonna stay to da paket mix lol. cya

bibi
I made this the other night. Rating: Yes.
After making it, I have a couple of suggestions for modifying the recipe, too.
My mouth thanks you for posting this recipe, although my clothing may start groaning about it soon.
Great recipe, thanks
Wow, just made this THANKS
wont the mug break?? if u turn on to 1000watts?
and what kind of cake flour?
Hello over there, thank you very much for this great recipe. I tried it a few minutes ago. It tastes fantastic. I guess I´ll start a next try tomorrow.
Greetings from Germany. – Andree.
Hmm, I’ve been playing around and have found a slightly richer version – I’ve have come to affectionately think of it as 4321 cake! It goes like this:
4 tbsp flour
4 tbsp sugar
3 tbsp milk
2 tbsp oil
2 tbsp dark chocolate cocoa
1 egg
3 mins at full power in an 850 watt microwave! Pics in my Flickr site:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/daveclayton/2707708532/
http://www.flickr.com/photos/daveclayton/2707666762/
Now, does that look tasty or what? And yes, it is terribly, terribly addictive….
Dave
Thanks for the recipe! Just perfect for 2 pieces of cake. I did not use cake flour, just regular flour. That was good. The second time, I only nuked for 2 minutes and added one teaspoon of applesauce. Moist and delicious. We are now thinking of all the things we can put on top-like chocolate syrup, caramel syrup, jams and jellies. Again, thanks.
Wow this is so good! Great Sunday afternoon snack.
As for the cake flour I put 1 1/2 tsp cornstarch in bottom of 1/4 cup measuring cup then topped it off with flour.
Very Very easy and great for small snacks to share with my hubby. Wish i know about this when i was in college.
Tried it several times and the kids love it. I added a little bit of water or use fresh milk as the replacement for powdered milk. Also tried: replace the cocoa powder with coffee, or with orange powder.
Thank you for this! I tried it and it was delicious.
Thanks for the recipe- it satisfied my chocolate craving. I found another recipe, you might want to try : )
http://thedomesticscientist.com/2008/07/17/hideous-but-delicious-microwaveable-cake/
oh, wait. I’m going to have to retract my positive feedback. I feel queasy- way too much oil & egg. I’m sticking with made from a box, oven type cakes. bleech. where’s the pepto?
This is a really good idea. just made it with what in the UK is called a tablespoon, but the spoon in the picutre looks more like a tea spoon? doesnt matter though, the cake was still nice, if a bit rubbery. old it be possible, d you think, to make this cake on a larger scale? for example, used a bowl and double/triple all of the tablespoons of ingrediant used? this could be excellent for making quick birthday cakes or whatever. feel free to email me at deathlytom@yahoo.co.uk
Just did it
Great Job here!
failcaek.
as if all that fits in a mug! more like a bowl
and it like failed in microwave. but still tastes gud, haha.
ace i use this all the time but i add a extra ingredient called weed it makes a great space cake and gets you absolutly mashed i love it thanks
Nice idea! I used to buy “Warm Delights” chocolate cake which was this same concept, just not homemade! Thanks for the homemade version!
Someone please help me out here, my cake ended up in a jello form. Also, the flavour was very bland, how can I make the cake softer and more flavourful?
This is the perfect treat for a single person craving something sweet! It’s fun to make and watch rise then suck itself back into the cup. I have made this a bunch of times now. I only have one suggestion. I found that if I mixed it in a separate bowl I got the ingredients blended together better. When I mixed it in the cup I tended to not get it mixed up well leaving some dry ingredients in the bottom.
fantastic fun idea! i got this by email & had to try it! now i’m off to look up more recipes like this… yum!
OK…
How can you people be getting this wrong? it’s so simple! just do what the instructions say! i’ve done it four times now and its alays worked perfectly!
Great cake. Good to cook if someone is coming round unexpectantly
Five stars
yeah, i made this, but i guess i didn’t stir it enough because the oil was all over the place. still, for 5 minutes, it tasted extravagant!!!!
noel, you’re a genius.
Cool! Now thats a CUPCAKE!
GUESS WHAT?
I’m eating the cake that I made now!
its yummy.
thanxx for the tip!
people . . . too many people like cupcakes. . you can make like 12 in a batch for less than 12 minutes. . and hey america is working on the obesity . . its the war(with the worlds) we should be worried about
love and peace
an american posing as a canadian
The first go wasn’t great–no cake flour, 700 watt microwave, 2 and half minutes.
The second go at it I did add about 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda, and a pinch of salt. Much lighter, fluffier and less “spongy” and far more cake-like.
Fun!
good idea but it looks like dog food
Let’s hear for unhealthyness
I modified this to my ovo-vegetarian ways and used rice milk. We had also run out of caster sugar so I used brown sugar.
Plus, for fun, I added three cubes of bittersweet chocolate to the centre.
The two made a nice addition and it turned of splendidly.
I smothered it in cream, split it in half, and the chocolate just oozed out!
AND! 5/5 on the taste test.
It was a little tough, so next time I’ll make it self saucing.
I better eat it before mum gets home…
Cheers!
yummm!! i just made this little cake.
SPACE CAKE WOOOOOOO!
Nice, I had a craving for chocolate cake last night I wish I would have know about this!

didn’t have eggs in the house, but i wanted it so bad that i made it w/o the eggs anyways. still turned out pretty good! this is an AWESOME idea
awful. spongy and tasteless. not worth the calories or the 7 minutes it takes to make it.
Tasted. horrible. Was completely DRY.
Good concept though but I’m pretty sure you need to fix the ingredients and ratios.
And I’d like to add the fact that it looks revolting in the pictures here on this website and when I removed it from the microwave. It looked like the cake from the movie ‘Accepted,’ although I’m sure those pieces of shit tasted better.
Wow! this worked great =D
Hahhaha, this is nuts… love it.
Doesn’t anyone else think it looks like poo?
The mug is pooing.
But I agree, it looks delicious. Because I’m a pig. And I roll in poo.
Woo!
The picture looks good enough to eat. I like it
We tried whole wheat flour instead of cake flour, 1/4 cup of egg beaters instead of the egg, and replaced one of the Tbs of oil with 3 Tbs ground flax seed. (We still kept 2 Tbs oil, mostly for the moisture). Not bad.
That is awesome! Will definitely be trying soon.
Why are we still sitting here? Let’s head to the kitchen and try it out! I will make some coffee. LOL
This was great! It tasted really good but I definitely think I’m going to throw some of my own ideas in next time. Thanks!
This looks like the doody from 2 girls one cup movie
What a cool, delicious little idea.
I can’t wait to try it!
Merci beaucoup
I read it, tried it and tasted it, all in ten minutes. I’m not that happy about the taste, but seeing that I’m extremely picky on my chocolate cakes, that doesn’t matter. I’m going to personalize the recipe anyways.
No fish shaped anything or rhubarb!?
Still, a good recipe!
Cool idea!
Nice quick recipe. Will definitely try this =)
One of the best quick-to-do-munchie for the ages. Oh by the way, works as well great using pancake mix with half of the banana, milk. egg or substitute and cinnamon.
Great recipe!! I loved it, I do know this, there are some people that really need help with their own cooking if the food is coming out tasting like a turd or thinking turds taste better….why would you even be thinking of a turd when you are about to put food in your mouth??!!! Thanks for sharing, I love it!!! Am guilty of putting some chocolate syrup on it when I poured it out of the cup onto my home-made ice-cream…it rocked!!!
Okay so I see the cup, but where are the two girls?
Hey. Just understand this please….
I love you and everything you are about. May you shine, bruva.
Is this edible?
To cut calories I used 3T milk and only 1T oil, and also threw in a splash of vanilla extract. Thanks for saving me from cravings tonight!
hey i just tried your recipe and now we are shocked with my mum
honestly,we didnt expect such a result like that
thank you very much
OMG amazing but change the oil to 1 and 1/2 oil and 1 and 1/2 butter one more sugar and 1 more 1 coco and 1 creme fresh when done add toffee source it is like having sex, for the first time with every mouth full
DA cake man
My son and I tried this tonite and it was GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!
We need more guick and easy recipes for the microwave.
Yummy.
just tried this recipie, used normal flour and 4 tablespoons of milo instead of cocoa and a huge mug and it turned out fantastic.
omg, thank u so much.
gross cake made ina microwave how lazy is that
So, Someone gave me a link to This Yesterday, and after reading the comments I decided to try this, but with modifications.
I mixed together THROUGHLY:
1/2 tsp. Baking Soda
3 1/2 Tbsp. Flour
2 Tbsp. Cocoa Powder
4 Tbsp. Sugar
in a microwave-safe bowl
and in a separate bowl, mixed
1 Egg white and half of the yolk.(for health reasons, but enough for flavor.)
3 Tbsp. milk
2 Tbsp. Melted butter
I added the wet ingredients to the dry, and stirred it up until all of it was moistened(no major clumps of dry ingredients-some small though. which is fine, because it bakes out.)According to the comments, over-mixing it will make a tough and rubbery cake.
Since I had a 800watt Microwave, I nuked it for 3 minutes, but in a ceramic bowl instead of a mug. It smelled a bit weird while it was cooking, and I was afraid that it was going to be a total flop. However…
It actually didn’t turn out too bad! I should have added 1 tsp. Vanilla though. It wasn’t as chocolaty as the normal cake I bake, but it was pretty good! The texture was actually cake like -not like a brownie at all. very soft when you pressed on it. It needed an Icing though…
Looking online, I found a Chocolate Sauce Recipe, and I 1/4th’d it.
1/4 Cup Sugar(I used normal, white granulated sugar)
1/2 Tbsp. Cocoa Powder
1/2 Tbsp. Flour
1/3 C. Milk
3/4 Tbsp. Butter(unmelted, but it’s actually the soft Shedd’s spread stuff in the tub.May make the difference if you use real butter, so be careful.)
1/4 tsp. vanilla
I mixed the dry ingredients VERY THROUGHLY first, then added the wet.(incl. butter.) and wisked it over low heat on the stove for a couple of minutes constantly until it thickened up a bit. Since this isn’t a frosting/icing, but a sauce, it didn’t need to be super-thick. when it started bubbling quickly was about when it was ready.
I believe while the cake is nuking you could easily make the sauce in time, assuming you put the ingredients in the saucepan first.
It was JUST THE RIGHT AMOUNT of sauce for this cake! me and My brother split it, since it took up the whole volume of the bowl. For a quick snack made with a Microwave and ingredients I already had, it was awesome! I’ll make it again sometime.
slight issue though if your going for looks: The cake will stick to the bowl,so if you want to just flip it on a plate to serve, you will have to grease another bowl up and pour the batter in there.to clean it up, soak it in hot water and a bit of dish soap. when your done eating, the stuff will come off fairly easily.(water-spray actually took most of it off.)
And Andrea, If you are still here: In health food stores, there’s something called Carob Powder. In recipes calling for Cocoa powder, you can use this cup-for-cup instead! It works so well as a substitute you can make Hot Carob using your favorite Hot cocoa Recipe!I’ve used it in a Hershey’s Chocolate cake Recipe, and it turned out beautifully! It does have a different taste then chocolate, but I quite like it, even though I can have chocolate. My Mom can’t have chocolate, however, because she gets migraines, and discovered this stuff. Though,If you find Carob chips, don’t try baking with them: They will burn very easily and mess with the cookie or whatever you are making. The Powder is fine though.
I found it needed a pinch of salt.
I will be trying variations on the theme, like w/o cocoa, with blueberries and a dash of vanilla.
YUMMMMMMMM!!!!
yuck dude, i just made this, it needs salt
Dee! You’re a genius! Mmm Cake!
By the bye, it’s better if you use really good quality cocoa but I guess that’s kinda obvious! ;o)
LOL@ someone who can’t even use proper capitalization and punctuation chiding the Internet for being “lazy.”
Terrible! Well, OK – I’ve already made and eaten two of these . . . . Gack! Where has my waistline gone?!?
Seriously, great for lazy mornings when you have your coffee and newspaper all ready and find that your husband has finished off the pastries.
Thanks!
This is amazing really tasty….Smells like its burnings but it isn’t. Thanks for the recipeee!
Came over from here
Tried it today. Actually, not *quite* a cake, but more of a sweet-chocolatee-soft-warm-sweet that goes very well with tea.
Thanks, this will be a regular tea-snack at our home in future..
THIS IS GREAT!!!! it’s delicious and really really easy!
just a little note: add a pinch of salt…it improves the taste!
so i tried this yesterday…
first try: copied the entire recipe word for word (but added 1 tablespoon of vanilla flavored coffee creamer) – it was spectacular! :”D
second try: all same with my first try except added a sachet of instant coffee and baked it for around 2 mins instead of 3 (i’m not sure what our microwave’s wattage is). this turned out even better! very moist and can you say mocha!?! hahaha! yummy!
thanks for this! we’re excited to try out variations of this 5 minutes cake later!
I was instructed to buy chocolate chips to add to it – plus vanilla ice cream for additional omph!
fatty fatty fatty!
wow, first of all, thats probably the longest list of comments!!i had to scroll down like for an hour, LOl)) this cake is cute, i am going do one too

I didn’t have time to read all the comments, but I made a few changes to give it a little kick and much healthier:
4 T. all purpose flour
3 T. sugar
1/8 tsp. baking powder
2 T. Cocoa powder
1/8 tsp. cinnamon
dash cayenne
1 egg white
3 T. unsweetened applesauce
3 T. non fat milk
Yum! Thanks for the idea. Eat it right away or it gets hard.
I just made this and I’m eating it as we speak! It is amazing!!! I don’t know what all of you are doing wrong but it came out perfectly for me. I altered the recipe slightly (regular flour, 2 T oil, dash of salt, dash of baking powder), topped it with powdered sugar and it’s incredible. I’m in Denver at 5280 feet above sea level with a high powered microwave (had to cook less than 2 minutes). If you got bad results the first time, try it again, it’s worth it.
Mine turned out gelatinous. D:
Pretty cool! Just made it and tasted it! Not bad for fresh cake! Nice novelty. Thumbs up, even though I found the texture a bit springy.
Thank you you have saved my street cred with grandchildren who popped round when I had no treats in. It was ok and I shall do it again and maybe try putting some choc inside.
DELICIOUS!!
try it with nutella (a chocolate hazelnut spread) as frosting even better.
I do not have all purpose flour or cake flour. I only have bread flour, Im scared something horrible is going to happen!
Dis was nasteeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
Hi all, God bless you Dizzy Dee….It was good…My husband just ate it for dessert! I hate eggs so when i make it for myself the plan is to experiment with just the whites…THANKS…BTW my oven doesn’t work so we haven’t has dessert in weeks!! What is next 5 minute microwave biscuits? I am sending this link to all my friends..And no I am not obese, just american to all those who commented on this recipe adding to “america’s problem…plus dizzy is in SA! right?
sorry its late going to bed..dreaming sweet chocolatey dreams.
This will makes your kitchens unusable for a long times…. We tried to id in our office. It was very fun but ask it to women who will cleans that place…
i’ve just tryed it now, and it’s cooked all the way through but it looks like a rubber sponge hahaha
and it doesn’t taste of anything tbh…
might stick a bit of whipped cream on it when it’s cool, might taste a bit better
FUN
AND GOOD WITH CHOCOLATE SYRUP ON IT!
Hi!
I’ve just tried it… and loved it
I’m a teacher and I’ll be using this soon with my kids.
Cheers from Portugal
GUYS, SERIOUSLY, IT IS JUST HALF ASSED CAKE IN A MUG. STOP ACTING LIKE THIS IS THE GOD OF CAKES.
Omg I’m so gonna make this but prolly gonna stop before baking. Raw dough sounds pretty darn good.!
I’m sorry. But this just looks like poo in a cup.
I made this last week and thought it was pretty good for coming from the microwave! I did add a little chocolate syrup on top. Mine was a little dense, so I think I may add some levener next time like baking powder. Thanks for the great idea!
This was AWFUL. Like eating as dish sponge. I have never felt so little joy while eating cake. THIS CAKE IS A LIE AND ANYONE WHO CLAIMS TO LIKE IT IS A LIE.
I received this recipe via e-mail and tried it 3 times. I’m playing around with vanilla and strawberry essence and enjoy the baking and eating every time. Just landed on this blog when looking for the recipe after a friend asked me for it.
I tried this, the only modifications to the recipe being:
-Slightly less oil (2.5 tablespoons?)
-Slightly less egg yolk (3/4 egg yolk?)
-2 tablespoons out of the 4 tablespoons of sugar was ‘vanilla sugar’
-3 minutes, 30 seconds instead of 3 minutes
-Pinch of salt
-In a bowl instead of a mug, later turned over onto a plate
The rest was followed word for word.
While mixing, the egg yolk and white refused to mix together at first, but eventually did once I started mixing around the edges.
The cake came out looking better than it tasted; once I bit into it, I was reminded clearly of a spongelike texture, and not in a good way. Incredibly chewy, and I kept thinking about the 4 tablespoons of sugar and 2.5 tablespoons of oil. It also tasted different in different parts of the cake. I’ll mix the batter more next time, get the cake out earlier, and use more milk. Any other tips to make it fluffier and lighter?
This is so cool! I tried it without cocoa though, it was still awesome!!!
WAIT, actually if you don’t have cocoa add meltd peanut butter instead, ’cause if you don’t….it will taste like EGGS.
OMG! me and my friend were making stupid videos and we didn’t have any idea on what subject to make our next video on. we looked up easy recipes because the sub. of our next show was to be cooking. so we made your cake and it was the best thing ever. it was so easy and took so little time we want to thank you! it was yummy.
I made it but I did some things a little wrong
.
I put to much flower i it so it became realy fat!
Not enough milk and sugar so it came out pretty bad.
Beside all that its great
Yum. I just made it. It was a bit dry but I think I could have put in a bit more milk.
I did it with wholemeal flour, which gave it a nice texture.
Great with ice-cream.
It wasn’t top quality cake, but it was quick and delicious. I replaced cocoa with green tea powder and mixed all the ingredients at once and it still tasted great.
Thanks for this.
Nice cake
Thanks for the recipe!
I tried it using rice flour in a big tall mug and it turned out very well! I cut it up and sprinkled icing sugar on the bits for my kids to eat. Next time I will cook it a little less time and maybe incorporate something to make it softer like applesauce or banana – these additions work well with rice flour breads in general.
cheers!

Yummy… I’m hungry now… i crave on chocolate cake and i want some. Thanks for these easy recipe.
it smelt and tasted like egg a bit – (think i’ll use more sugar)
a bit sponge – (think i’ll use more milk)
horrible after taste…but maybe its because i used old coco powder (hope i dont get sick)
but altoghether great idea
That is the easiest baking I have ecer seen in my entire life! Thanks for the tip!!!!
August 30, 2008
Don’t I need to oil (or grease) the cup first to keep the cake from sticking to the mug? I know that is necessary when scrambling an egg in a mug.
PS – I found it difficult to read the small print on the black background
Me and my friend are about to make one!
they look fantabulous! i am going to make it in 6 ughhhh!
never 5 i cant do odd numbers…
im not an odd person, only odd people do odd numbers
im even…. well that would mean i was gay… i promise im straight! ….ish im kinda bi, cuz me and my friend just hoked up.. oh well
<3333 yummy! cakealiscious definition!
Gosh darn. Off to make this RIGHT NOW! My bulging thighs and gut thank you.
use milo instead of cocoa
use milo instead of cocoa
This didn’t turn out well for me.. It got all rubber-like
Dunno what I did wrong.
Hey! I made it. Liked it. Going to make it again and hopefully mum will like it.
To save washing up i ate it in the cup! So now all i have to wash up is mesuring spoons and a cup!
I put a tablespoon to many with the oil but it turned out fine and i think next time i make it i might add some choc melts in the mix to melt. I also might try and cook it for a min less.
P.s. I also left out a tablespoon of sugar because i didn’t want mine to sweet.
P.ss. Garnished it with rich choc sauce and it kind of looked like self saucing pudding to me (although not as sweet)
hi
im looking for a cake with no egg for my brother i was just asking if you could help me out with it.
thanks if you can
raichel
omg dis is gorgeuse highly recomended
my husband and I absolutely LOVE this little cake. what a treat!
I dont make it in a mug, but instead a large microwaveable dish, the flatter bottom the better. I measure exactly, the first few times I made it I just threw it together, we still liked it but its better when its exact.
this may sound very strange but I stop the microwave when I first smell the burnt flavour, quickly taking it out. it will still have liquid ontop of the cake but that just makes it even better, I slice the cake in half, putting each on a plate and add scoops of vanilla icecream, and the batter that was left behind I spoon over the icecream.
OMG! seriously what a great cake. its not rubbery, its not exactly fluffy and light either but wow! I would actually serve this to friends thats how confident that others will like this.
As I sad before I have made this little cake several times, I have tryed applesauce instead of 3T oil, I have tried even a splash of pepsi, hey girl has to experiment, no change to our palat what so ever, not trying either again. I have tryed blend instead of the milk as well as buttermilk. I didnt find it richer not going to try it again, I like my skim milk best. I have done the mini chocolate chips, sad I thought they would melt, they didnt. I will try chocolate/sugar/butter crumbs in the bottom some time, but not soon.
I would say dont heat on full power no matter what size your machine is, watch it, and when it gets that gross smell take it out, dont worry about the runny stuff, its GOOD!
peace in peace out
