Wow! I just made this in a small bowl instead of the cup, and the result was a nicely tasting cake, that even had a nice shape from the bowl (and the oil made it easy to transfer). It was even better with a little whipped cream on it.

Are you sure you meant tablespoon rather than dessert spoon? They look the same but dessert spoons are smaller. When I used a tablespoon, it didn’t fit in a standard mug, and the ratios must have been off, as it didn’t taste the best.

The recipie is ok but it needs frosting (I made a quick homemade batch and put it on my cake) so it wasn’t too bad but I think I will stick with oven baked cake.

This is sooo easy and totally indulges that chocolate craving. I used a large mug and had a very pretty and large cupcake on my hands…I wonder if I could turn this into a molten chocolate cake with a gooey center? Oh the possibilities!
Also, this would make a great dorm-warming gift. A nice fat mug filled with the dry ingredient mix wrapped with the recipe tied on. You could even include some teas/instant coffees/hot cocoas…anything mug related and comforting.

To Nathan Millar – cake flour is simply super fine flour. You can make it by double or triple sifting all purpose flour…or adding a tablespoon of cornstarch to each cup of all purpose flour.
Hi Nathan Miller from New Zealand. Cake flour is NOT the same as self rising flour. Cake flour is a type of flour that is made from a special wheat – a little “softer” than regular wheat so it makes better cakes and pastry. You can use regular all purpose flour in this recipe, but you may have to use a tablespoon or so less. Good luck!

Tested this last night, it works well.
Initially I was sceptical about everything fitting in a mug and assumed merkans table spoon was a UK desert spoon, upon realising my mix was waaaay too runny I started adding another spoon of flour/sugar/chocolate powder until the mug was more full and a better consistancy was reached, however forward planning meant I put the mug in a plastioc bowl… And foresight appears to be 20/20 as it overflowed and filled the bowl too. Mix was drier (I neglected to add extra milk and oil) but was a very edible consistency of cake.
I started with Neskuik milkshake powder as I couldn’t find our cocoa then my wife with her extra sensory perception cupboard divination skills located our bournville dark cocoa which when upgraded from stupid plastic “table spoon” measuring device (version 2.0, larger rounded bottom mug made a steam pudding style sponge “stodgy” comes to mind with the mix being a bit on the wet side) to proper old school traditional “Scottish Granny” inherited table spoon the mix made in a 5″ diameter straight sided soup bowl (v3.0) yielded an impressive cake (tipped it out onto a plate then turned it over – this gives it a nice flat top) that looked good enough to fire on some glaze made from cocoa icing sugar and water then cut in half and fill with butter icing with cocoa… Nutella chocolate spread would be a quick option too.
The end result looked so presentable that a candle on top would make them perfect individual birthday cakes (a bit like a large flat topped muffin)
I made this, exactly as the recipe states, and it came out very dense and eggy.
Any way I can fix this? It was delicious, just not very “cakey.”

I tried this.. I have two young boys at home. and they are ALWAYS wanting snacks.. IT WORKS!! I used a bowl.. and when I tipped it out of the bowl.. its in a nice little round cake shape! I let it cool, and we put whipped cream all over it, got three forks, and…DUG IN!!! Im delighted that it took all of 5 minutes! And the cleanup took oh… about TWO!! LOL. LOVE IT LOVE IT! Thank you… its few recipes that I can make well… this ones a keeper! It also will come in handy for the last minute birthdays… housewarming gift, get well cake… the possibilities are endless!!

im sorry to say that i am very disapointed in this recipe it took me longer time because i had to make my own cake flour and maybe homemade cake flour isnt as good or something or maybe i did something wrong but everything was looking good until i tasted it. Terrible, hopefully it works for others but it did not for me. I am also now feeling sick to my stomach after eating it. Hope you have better luck with yours than i did.

Oh this is pretty cool! I don’t think I measured properly though, since it was a bit dry, and I probably over mixed it since it was a little tough, but it was still good when I had it with milk!
As to those who were talking about cake flour… The real difference between cake flour and other flours (such as all purpose or bread flour) lies primarily in the protein content, though it is also finer than the others. Cake flour has less protein in it so that it doesn’t create as much gluten which results in lighter, fluffier cakes. However all-purpose flour mixed with cornstarch can be used as a substitute in a pinch. ;D
Are you suppose to use UNSWEETENED cocoa? Cause I tried it and it was BAD :[

I have enjoyed all the feedback – great to hear that the majority of you liked it. For those who didn’t get such a good result, note that cake flour is different from all purpose flour and self raising flour. I don’t know what the result will be when you use all purpose flour with some corn starch in it, so I wouldn’t recommend it, but you’re welcome to let me know if it worked for you.
Also, about the measurements, for interest sake, a tablespoon as refered to in the recipe, is assumed to be 12,5ml. Also, the cocoa is definitely unsweetened cocoa – I think it might be a bit too sweet with sweetened cocoa AND sugar.
Your type/size of microwave will have a huge effect on how your choclate muffin/cake turns out. It would definitely have to have a turn table. The microwave’s power will also have an effect, but I’m not sure what its suppose to be unfortunately.
And lastly, I’ve tried some variations of this recipe. I’ve added a bit of baking powder so make it a bit more fluffy, and dark chocolate bits make it nice and moist.
I might try the frosting on top of the dough mixture prior to cooking as Jacquie suggested.

Eating it as we speak. For 3 minutes, it’s pretty amazing. Definitely should be eaten with cream though, which I’ve run out of.
If you’re in the UK, a tablespoon is the same as 2 teaspoons. I would have thought it’s the same in the States.
Also, I used plain flour instead of cake flour and it turned out perfectly. I added a dash of baking powder just in case.
And, I microwaves it for 3 minutes in only an 800Watt micro with good results.
Like I said, needs to be eaten with cream. But a chocolate sauce would be better. Maybe by mixing some sugar, cocoa and hot water, pouring it over the mix just before microwaving. Like a self-saucing chocolate pudding. Worth a try.

Here is a modified recipe I developed today upon experimenting
) I wanted a fluffy cake, but I didn’t have cake flour…and because I had no cocoa, I decided to use ginger and cinnamon. For a one-time experiment, I think it came out lovely!
Ingredients:
4 Tablespoons all-purpose flour
3 Tablespoons sugar
1 Teaspoon spice (cinnamon, ginger, whatever you like. Add more/less if you want!)
1/8 Teaspoon baking powder
1 Egg white
3 Tablespoons milk (or soy milk)
2 Tablespoons vegetable oil
1/4 Teaspoon vanilla extract
1 Microwave-safe bowl or mug
Instructions:
Mix flour, sugar, spice and baking powder
Mix in egg white
Pour in milk, oil and vanilla, and mix well
Put in microwave for 2.5-3 minutes on maximum power (1000 watt)
Wait until it stops rising and sets in the bowl/mug

Delicious and so easy! Thanks for the recipe. For those of you who are having difficulty, substituting 3 tablespoons plus 1 1/2 (one and one half) teaspoons of all-purpose flour in place of the 4 tablespoons of cake flour worked fine for me (the conversion is 1 cup minus 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour for every 1 cup of cake flour).
It’s a good start, but too much egg. Also, add a tiny pinch of salt.
Ok that was not good and nothing that resembles a baked cake. Got a good laugh though. If this adds to American obesity…god people get some taste.

I just made this( I didnt eat the whole thing because of all the fat in it), and I loved it, haha. I never knew I could make cake this simple. I used Hot Chocolate mix as my Cocoa. Next time I make this, I think I will use the whole packet of hot chocolate mix, and less sugar, but either way good recipe for a quick cup cake

I actually tried making microwave-cupcakes with special microwave-safe silicone pans. The bread was soft and fluffy, however I can’t stand the taste and texture. Too moist for me (the wrong kind of moist)
I tried it, it became very spongy and a rubbery texture, taste was OK though.
Alright, for everyone complaining about the recipe being off, it would seem that we all learned an important lesson today. UK tablespoon does not equal US tablespoon. In the UK a tablespoon is 12.5 mL while in the US it is 15 mL. However, even those numbers are contested depending on where you get your information. That’s going to make a difference in the final product. Now, I haven’t tried this yet myself, but it should work out as follows (following Dizzy Dee’s 12.5 mL):
50 mL cake flour
50 mL sugar
25 mL cocoa
1 Egg
37.5 mL milk
37.5 mL oil
ok so don’t use chocolate milk mix

I just tried this. I used a 10 oz coffee mug. A taller, mine was just under 4″ tall, taller mug would have been better or a bowl. It did run over just a bit. The runover was tasty.
This cake would be great for a special, quick dessert, easily be shared by two, and no tempting leftovers. I will try this again. Thanks, I liked it.
I have further modified my version (posted above) and ended up with a much better looking cake than before. This was likely due to replacing 1 tbs of oil with unsweetened applesauce. All measurements are US measurements:

I might try this, although it doesn’t look that great to me. I love baking and I love chocolate cake and the ratios in that recipe look totally warped and off to me. Looks like too much sugar. Looks like too much egg (although what can you do?) I’d think that much egg would dry it out considerably. But then it does have a load of oil and milk for the amount of flour used. I donno. Not convinced, but I’ve got a serious chocolate craving going on and the only chocolate I have is cocoa powder, and this seems like a good quick fix if it turns out well. I will return when I have tried it. =)
… it’s not as dry as I thought it would be. I only used half the egg, and I added a pinch of salt & vanilla extract. I also used 3.4 tbls of sugar because 4 seems like way too much. It’s not that good. It has a REALLY weird taste to it. It is fixing my chocolate craving but this is the worst chocolate cake I’ve had. There’s just this certain flavor to it that I can’t put my finger on. When it was in the microwave it smelled like popcorn. Or cigars. Sorry.
Hi, everyone! I’ve been cooking & baking all sorts of things for more than 15 years, so perhaps I can add weight to the argument for this recipe. I’m in the U.K. and use exactly the same amount stated. The size of egg is also important here. Instead of large size eggs as I would have used in baking normal cakes, a medium one was used in this experiment. To conceal the eggy smell I have also put four drops of good vanila extract (the quality of which matters). This, on top of cocoa (the bitter, real kind, and again, the quality counts), gives the cake a lovely, welcoming aroma. Here, just like baking real cakes, the size and depth of the container is crucial. You have to know your heating appliance (oven or microwave) very well to obtain good results. I used a medium-small glass bowl, a 900W micrwave, and the result is good. Considering that it is a microwaved cake made within 10 minutes (incl. preparation & measurement), I have nothing to complain about. By the way, I used melted butter (never use any other type of grease when I bake) and golden caster sugar. White, refined sugar is not suitable for cakes. The cake I got was a small dome-shape dark chocolate cake, with just the right degree of sweetness. I cut it into six portions, each slice perfect to go with an espresso (or even cappuccino) for an elevenses or afternoon tea.

Just tried this, but didn’t have any normal cocoa so used mint flavour hot chocolate powder instead. Yummy! Although it smelt a bit odd while it was cooking.
Changed my mind, after the first few bites it taste odd… will try again with normal cocoa!

I did it today with alternate flours. For all you gluten free folks, you don’t have to skip this one!! Substitute the 4 Tbsp of wheat flour with 1 Tbsp each of quinoa, soy, white rice and potato starch. It works and is a real treat. I loved it and felt quite decadent with my own dessert, finally! LOVE IT!!! The variations are endless. Up until now I just do without. Too much trouble making a big cake just for me. (My husband doesn’t enjoy chocolate cake and definitely not the ‘fake stuff’, as he calls it!) Now I can truly have my cake and eat it too without fear of a reaction. I will also take it to dinners, etc, so I can enjoy dessert along with everyone else. Thanks so much!

I followed someone else’s lead & put mine in a bowl. Took it out & placed on a plate upside down & it was looked so nice.
Cake was very dense and I had no expectations so I was very happy.
Next time… (yes, there will be a next time) I will do what another said & experiment with some icing on the cake before it is cooked.

2 cups
1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 cup cornstarch
To make two cups of cake-and-pastry flour (cake flour), combine 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour with 1/4 cup cornstarch; proceed with your recipe.
The easiest way to do this substitution is to put 2 tbsp of cornstarch in the bottom of a 1-cup measuring cup, then fill the cup as usual with all-purpose flour and level top. Repeat process to get your two cups.
If you only need 1/2 cup of cake flour, put 1 tbsp cornstarch in bottom of 1/2 cup measuring cup, then fill and level as above.

Mmmm, I just made this. It turned out wonderful! It’s great. I made two small changes, I used soy milk instead of milk and for extra fun I mixed in chocolate chips! Just mix them in while you’re mixing in the dry ingredients.

I just tried this. It was a little tough, but I think I stirred it too much. The taste was a lot better than I expected, and the texture, though dense and slightly dry, was acceptable. You guys who are saying it’s terrible are either doing something incorrectly or you’re way too picky. It’s a microwave cake in a cup.
I think next time I’ll try mixing in a little cream instead of some of the oil and try to make it a bit more moist and tender.
Probably too much oil, as some people have said. Incidentally, vegetable oil in itself, if you don’t get fat from eating too much of it, is an unsaturated fat and isn’t believed to contribute to heart disease. If you want to do better, use a monounsaturated fat (only one I can think of at the moment is olive oil, but there are other, less flavorful ones). A monounsaturated fat is liquid at room temperature, but clouds up and begins to set in cold weather or in the fridge.
You could add mashed fruit, like banana, to replace some of the oil if you like. I might try that–sounds good.

Just made this a few minutes ago. The texture was a bit tough and rubbery (maybe I had the exact measurements off a bit), but the taste is AWESOME! A nice warm treat when you’re too tired too cook anything more involved, or for dorm-dwellers.

The first time I made this – with 1 tsp baking powder – it was wonderful. Second time with self raising flour a bit rubbery? Now keen to make a non chocolate version. Does anyone know whether I will need to increase flour if I omit cocoa?
I made this using our standard NZ Tablespoon (tbspn)which is 15mls and just used self raising flour. I used 2 tbspn cream instead of the oil and 4 tbspn of milk and halved the sugar. Next time I will be using vanilla extract as chocolate with out vanilla is just too naked. I cooked it in a pyrex 2 cup jug and microwaved it for 2.40 min as my microwave is 1200 watts. I have a diabetic sister coming over for tea tonight so I will be making it with apple puree and a couple of those disgusting artifical sweetners tablets. For a five minute cake it was pretty good although I will be sieving dry ingredients before mixing.

Can someone please tell me what I did wrong!! After two attempts, a burnt cake and and finally ending up with rubbery pretty afwul cakes im left wondering what i did wrong. The burnt one was contriubted to the microwave time: 3 minutes as instructed! After cutting the time back to 2 minutes they tasted horrible.

Cook for 1 minute. A little longer if your microwave sucks.

KEMRTB, have you ever tried the gluten-free cake mix one can buy? There are mixes in existance, and they aren’t too expensive – found it at our local supermarket too. Tastes pretty good, although texture is closer to a brownie.

I’ve sat and read all the comments regarding this 5 min. cake, and will definitely give it a try, and see if I want to make any adjustments or not. I tried this and it was pretty damn good, considering the minimal time invested. I did make some alterations to the recipe: I cut the oil down to 2 tbsp. instead of 3 and to the dry ingredients I added 1/8 tsp. baking powder. It came out a little dense, but it was still very tasty.
I made this for my sister who is diabetic and I used one whole cooked pureed apple and two tablets of sactabs. No oil or cream and a little more milk and she loved it

For a 5 minute cake in a mug it tasted quite good although I would pass the egg through a sieve before adding it to avoid the eggy smell next time. I also added a bit of frosting I had in the fridge and my boys LOVED it!
Ugh, I tried to adapt this into a white cake recipe since I didn’t have any cocoa powder on hand… The cake did not have a good smell, and I took 1 bite and then threw the rest away.
I have a 1,000 watt oven, and I microwaved it for exactly 3 minutes…Next time I try this, I will make sure I add cocoa powder.

I make something similar for my low carb diet, which may appeal to others who don’t want to use flour. I’d characterize it as more of a muffin than a cake.
1/4 cup flax meal
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
1 egg
1 packet Splenda
1 teaspoon butter
Microwave for 1 minute or so (assuming 1000 watts)
I usually add cinnamon (2 tsp) as well, and I put butter on it after cooking. But cocoa might be nice too.
You can mix up a large batch of dry ingredients ahead of time and store for a ready-to-use muffin mix.

They sell this (microwaveable cake in a mug) in Japan. They even come in different flavors, not just chocolate! The packet comes with all of the dry ingredients. I think it was just add milk and an egg since I don’t remember using oil, but don’t hold me to that.

I just made this and it was really nice! I was expecting it to be a total disaster (like most of the things I cook!) But it was really good, looked, smelled and tasted like cake! for those inquiring about all purpose vs cake flour- cake flour has almost half the gluten of all purpose, if you’re results are rubbery, you’ve got too much protein in your flour! also, due to the finer texture of cake flour, it’s not a 1 to 1 equivalence.

Excellent cake — not the tastiest I’ve *ever* eaten but hard to ask for more from a recipe this easy and fast! I reduced the oil by 1 tablespoon and it still worked out just fine. I also made it in a bowl instead of a cup.
I’m thinking of perhaps trying to add some Vanilla or Almond flavor next time I make this. Could even perhaps just leave out the chocolate and make a vanilla cake at some point.

Looks like about a 1:9 to 1:10 fail:win ratio… Mostly worked for me.
Didn’t use a big enough mug, but by the end of the 3 minutes, the runny glop solidified enough to slice cleanly off the outside of the cup. Whee. Not a perfect cake, but still handily beat any prepackaged cake mix I’ve ever tried. No cake flour was on hand, so I used a touch less than 1/4 cup all-purpose (Canadian/hard-wheat) flour and 1.5 tsp cornstarch. Both flour and sugar were converted from (4 tbsp)s to (1/4 cup)s, because I hadn’t read the replies about UK vs. US tablespoons. I used canola oil (instead of the olive oil many people seem to favor), as I find it more flavorless than olive oil for sweet items.
So: Wrong container size, wrong flour, wrong system of measurement, and IT STILL WORKED. Put some ice cream on top and was very happy.
“White” variant might be a little trickier…proportionally, that’s a fair amount of cocoa, which would make the whole thing runnier if it was simply dropped…

I’m from Europe, tried it with a normal European tablespoon, and plain flour – I just sifted it and added a touch of baking powder. I took a really big mug, so that nothing could run over. I also have only a 800w microwave.

I just made this and it was sooo good! I was really surprised. I didn’t have cake flour so I used all-purpose, it probably would have been a little bit lighter with the cake flour. it was great anyway. a tip: just put a teeny smudge of nutella and/or some whipped cream on top of the cake to make it feel like a real cake, with icing, without all the work. ps, I only needed half to be totally full. what a great recipe!

regular flour
powdered sugar (adds the startch normally found in cake flour)
splash vanilla
chnaged from 3 milk to 2 milk 1 coffee
teeny teeny pinch salt
drizzled it with ice cream caramel after it was done : ) great work
this recipe is fabulous, love it! i’ve just made it for the second time and improvised with some brown sugar over white in the cake, microwaved for 2:15 instead of 3 and tried an experimental chocolate-lemon-raspberry sauce that came out far better than i had expected. beautiful results!

A wide mouth mug works *way* better than a narrow mug. Pops right out of the mug onto a plate ready to be covered in whipped cream.
Add chopped walnuts, and boost the cocoa a bit to taste.
this came out really dry and hard. seems to be overcooked in my microwave. ooops microwave is 1200 watts. need to reduce cooking time.

This has been a hit and I can see why. Just made this for the first time and it came out perfectly. It’s so easy to make, just mix together, you think everything wont fit in a mug but once wet it compacts down so you can mix it easily. The cake rose beautifully, good fun to watch so kids will love it. The cake that came out of the microwave was soft and lovely, not at all sickly and sweet but lovely and chocolatey. I used Cadbury’s hot chocolate as I was out of Coaco but it tastes wonderful. Amazingly quick and a delight to eat, you’ll want to make this every time someone comes over, just for the fun of it LOL

I just made this for my boyfriend’s daughter’s first birthday, since we need a little tiny cake for her. it came out AWESOME, and she really liked it.
for anyone who this didn’t work for, heres how i did it: i used the 4 tbs of flour (didnt have cake flour, used regular). used 2 tbs soft butter instead of oil. mix the flour, cocoa and sugar together first, then creamed in the butter. beat the egg seperately until foamy and then beat it some more after adding the 3 tbs milk (like you would for scramble eggs) added a little pinch of salt. the key, i think is to make sure you DO NOT OVER MIX IT. that is what makes baked goods thick and rubbery, or too heavy. just carefully and slowly stir until *just mixed*. then i nuked it for only 2min and 15sec. also i cooked in a little bowl instead of a cup for the proper “birthday cake” shape, and make some white icing for it. she loved it and it was super cute.

Thanks for the recipe! Just perfect for 2 pieces of cake. I did not use cake flour, just regular flour. That was good. The second time, I only nuked for 2 minutes and added one teaspoon of applesauce. Moist and delicious. We are now thinking of all the things we can put on top-like chocolate syrup, caramel syrup, jams and jellies. Again, thanks.

Very Very easy and great for small snacks to share with my hubby. Wish i know about this when i was in college.
Tried it several times and the kids love it. I added a little bit of water or use fresh milk as the replacement for powdered milk. Also tried: replace the cocoa powder with coffee, or with orange powder.

This is a really good idea. just made it with what in the UK is called a tablespoon, but the spoon in the picutre looks more like a tea spoon? doesnt matter though, the cake was still nice, if a bit rubbery. old it be possible, d you think, to make this cake on a larger scale? for example, used a bowl and double/triple all of the tablespoons of ingrediant used? this could be excellent for making quick birthday cakes or whatever. feel free to email me at deathlytom@yahoo.co.uk

This is the perfect treat for a single person craving something sweet! It’s fun to make and watch rise then suck itself back into the cup. I have made this a bunch of times now. I only have one suggestion. I found that if I mixed it in a separate bowl I got the ingredients blended together better. When I mixed it in the cup I tended to not get it mixed up well leaving some dry ingredients in the bottom.

The first go wasn’t great–no cake flour, 700 watt microwave, 2 and half minutes.
The second go at it I did add about 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda, and a pinch of salt. Much lighter, fluffier and less “spongy” and far more cake-like.

I modified this to my ovo-vegetarian ways and used rice milk. We had also run out of caster sugar so I used brown sugar.
Plus, for fun, I added three cubes of bittersweet chocolate to the centre.
The two made a nice addition and it turned of splendidly.
I smothered it in cream, split it in half, and the chocolate just oozed out!
AND! 5/5 on the taste test.
It was a little tough, so next time I’ll make it self saucing.
I better eat it before mum gets home…

We tried whole wheat flour instead of cake flour, 1/4 cup of egg beaters instead of the egg, and replaced one of the Tbs of oil with 3 Tbs ground flax seed. (We still kept 2 Tbs oil, mostly for the moisture). Not bad.

So, Someone gave me a link to This Yesterday, and after reading the comments I decided to try this, but with modifications.
I mixed together THROUGHLY:
1/2 tsp. Baking Soda
3 1/2 Tbsp. Flour
2 Tbsp. Cocoa Powder
4 Tbsp. Sugar
in a microwave-safe bowl
and in a separate bowl, mixed
1 Egg white and half of the yolk.(for health reasons,but enough for flavor.)
3 Tbsp. milk
2 Tbsp. Melted butter
I added the wet ingredients to the dry, and stirred it up until all of it was moistened(no major clumps of dry ingredients-some small though. which is fine, because it bakes out.)According to the comments, over-mixing it will make a tough and rubbery cake.
Since I had a 800watt Microwave, I nuked it for 3 minutes,but in a ceramic bowl instead of a mug. It smelled a bit weird while it was cooking, and I was afraid that it was going to be a total flop.However…
It actually didn’t turn out too bad! I should have added 1 tsp. Vanilla though. It wasn’t as chocolaty as the normal cake I bake, but it was pretty good! The texture was actually cake like -not like a brownie at all. very soft when you pressed on it. It needed an Icing though…
Looking online, I found a Chocolate Sauce Recipe, and I 1/4th’d it.
1/4 Cup Sugar(I used normal, white granulated sugar)
1/2 Tbsp. Cocoa Powder
1/2 Tbsp. Flour
1/3 C. Milk
3/4 Tbsp. Butter(unmelted, but it’s actually the soft Shedd’s spread stuff in the tub.May make the difference if you use real butter, so be careful.)
1/4 tsp. vanilla
I mixed the dry ingredients VERY THROUGHLY first, then added the wet.(incl. butter.) and wisked it over low heat on the stove for a couple of minutes constantly until it thickened up a bit. Since this isn’t a frosting/icing, but a sauce, it didn’t need to be super-thick. when it started bubbling quickly was about when it was ready.
I believe while the cake is nuking you could easily make the sauce in time, assuming you put the ingredients in the saucepan first.
It was JUST THE RIGHT AMOUNT of sauce for this cake! me and My brother split it, since it took up the whole volume of the bowl. For a quick snack made with a Microwave and ingredients I already had, it was awesome! I’ll make it again sometime.
slight issue though if your going for looks: The cake will stick to the bowl,so if you want to just flip it on a plate to serve, you will have to grease another bowl up and pour the batter in there.to clean it up, soak it in hot water and a bit of dish soap. when your done eating, the stuff will come off fairly easily.(water-spray actually took most of it off.)
And Andrea, If you are still here: In health food stores, there’s something called Carob Powder. In recipes calling for Cocoa powder,you can use this cup-for-cup instead! It works so well as a substitute you can make Hot Carob using your favorite Hot cocoa Recipe!I’ve used it in a Hershey’s Chocolate cake Recipe, and it turned out beautifully! It does have a different taste then chocolate, but I quite like it, even though I can have chocolate. My Mom can’t have chocolate, however, because she gets migraines, and discovered this stuff. Though,If you find Carob chips, don’t try baking with them: They will burn very easily and mess with the cookie or whatever you are making.The Powder is fine though.
I found it needed a pinch of salt.
I will be trying variations on the theme, like w/o cocoa, with blueberries and a dash of vanilla.

second try: all same with my first try except added a sachet of instant coffee and baked it for around 2 mins instead of 3 (i’m not sure what our microwave’s wattage is). this turned out even better! very moist and can you say mocha!?! hahaha! yummy!

I just made this and I’m eating it as we speak! It is amazing!!! I don’t know what all of you are doing wrong but it came out perfectly for me. I altered the recipe slightly (regular flour, 2 T oil, dash of salt, dash of baking powder), topped it with powdered sugar and it’s incredible. I’m in Denver at 5280 feet above sea level with a high powered microwave (had to cook less than 2 minutes). If you got bad results the first time, try it again, it’s worth it.

I received this recipe via e-mail and tried it 3 times. I’m playing around with vanilla and strawberry essence and enjoy the baking and eating every time. Just landed on this blog when looking for the recipe after a friend asked me for it.
I tried this, the only modifications to the recipe being:
-Slightly less oil (2.5 tablespoons?)
-Slightly less egg yolk (3/4 egg yolk?)
-2 tablespoons out of the 4 tablespoons of sugar was ‘vanilla sugar’
-3 minutes, 30 seconds instead of 3 minutes
-Pinch of salt
-In a bowl instead of a mug, later turned over onto a plate
The rest was followed word for word.
While mixing, the egg yolk and white refused to mix together at first, but eventually did once I started mixing around the edges.
The cake came out looking better than it tasted; once I bit into it, I was reminded clearly of a spongelike texture, and not in a good way. Incredibly chewy, and I kept thinking about the 4 tablespoons of sugar and 2.5 tablespoons of oil. It also tasted different in different parts of the cake. I’ll mix the batter more next time, get the cake out earlier, and use more milk. Any other tips to make it fluffier and lighter?

It wasn’t top quality cake, but it was quick and delicious. I replaced cocoa with green tea powder and mixed all the ingredients at once and it still tasted great.

I tried it using rice flour in a big tall mug and it turned out very well! I cut it up and sprinkled icing sugar on the bits for my kids to eat. Next time I will cook it a little less time and maybe incorporate something to make it softer like applesauce or banana – these additions work well with rice flour breads in general.

Don’t I need to oil (or grease) the cup first to keep the cake from sticking to the mug? I know that is necessary when scrambling an egg in a mug.

Hey! I made it. Liked it. Going to make it again and hopefully mum will like it.
To save washing up i ate it in the cup! So now all i have to wash up is mesuring spoons and a cup!
I put a tablespoon to many with the oil but it turned out fine and i think next time i make it i might add some choc melts in the mix to melt. I also might try and cook it for a min less.
P.s. I also left out a tablespoon of sugar because i didn’t want mine to sweet.
P.ss. Garnished it with rich choc sauce and it kind of looked like self saucing pudding to me (although not as sweet)

I dont make it in a mug, but instead a large microwaveable dish, the flatter bottom the better. I measure exactly, the first few times I made it I just threw it together, we still liked it but its better when its exact.
this may sound very strange but I stop the microwave when I first smell the burnt flavour, quickly taking it out. it will still have liquid ontop of the cake but that just makes it even better, I slice the cake in half, putting each on a plate and add scoops of vanilla icecream, and the batter that was left behind I spoon over the icecream.
OMG! seriously what a great cake. its not rubbery, its not exactly fluffy and light either but wow! I would actually serve this to friends thats how confident that others will like this.
As I sad before I have made this little cake several times, I have tryed applesauce instead of 3T oil, I have tried even a splash of pepsi, hey girl has to experiment, no change to our palat what so ever, not trying either again. I have tryed blend instead of the milk as well as buttermilk. I didnt find it richer not going to try it again, I like my skim milk best. I have done the mini chocolate chips, sad I thought they would melt, they didnt. I will try chocolate/sugar/butter crumbs in the bottom some time, but not soon.
I would say dont heat on full power no matter what size your machine is, watch it, and when it gets that gross smell take it out, dont worry about the runny stuff, its GOOD!

GREAT dorm food. quick easy and lots of sugar to keep u up on those long study nights!
I just made this and it turned out pretty good! I made some modifications, though. These are all in U.S. measurements, sea level elevation.
- I used 3 1/2 tablespoons all-purpose flour and 1/2 tablespoon corn starch.
- I substituted brown sugar.
- I added a small pinch of kosher salt.
- I added a few drops of vanilla extract.
- I only used half the egg white from the egg, and the full yolk.
- I used 2 tablespoons of butter and melted them instead of using any oil.
Procedurally, I mixed everything in a bowl and then moved it to the mug. I had a milk chocolate bar (Hershey’s Symphony) lying around so I took a square of it and stood it in the middle of the batter before microwaving.
I watched it closely while microwaving. 800 watt microwave. I did a minute, opened it up, looked at it, it didn’t look cooked. I did another 30 seconds and it rose considerably but not as much as it could have. I did another 30 seconds and it rose as high as it was going to and stayed there for the duration. It quickly sank when the heat stopped. I took it out and looked at it, and the edges of the cake had drawn away from the mug so it seemed ready. It was. So in all, I only needed two minutes.
Overall it came out very good! It has a moist, spongy texture which is not what I generally prefer, but it’s not bothersome. That’s the most “negative” thing I could say about it. Oh, and in the end, the chocolate bar’s flavor didn’t mesh well with the cake, so my “molten center” I was going for felt out of place. No big deal, I’ll just leave it out next time.
I did not have any problems with it tasting eggy or oily, and it was not at all dry or burnt.

I tried it with several variations and it still worked: I only had a box of yellow cake mix, chocolate chips and brown sugar.
I used 4 tablespoons on the cake mix, some chips, a tablespoon of brown sugar (since the cake mi already has some) and chocolate chips. I didnt have eggs or milk, so I just used water. I eyeballed it until the consistency was right. my chocolate chip cake was awesome!!!!

I didn’t really like the look of this recipe, but i liked the idea, so i started messing around with some stuff one night. What i ended up with is a mug of molten chocolate deliciousness called cake. I can’t compare it to the original recipe having never tried it, but honestly, its really good.

pour some cream into your mug. probably about a tablespoon or so. microwave for 30 seconds or until bubbly. Pour in some chocolate chips. stir until melted and blended, it should be dark and shiny. add 2 heaping spoons of flour, 2 spoons of sugar, 2 spoons of cocoa powder. mix up. add some more cream if it is too dry. If it looks like brownie batter, you are good. now, put a layer of chocolate chips on top. microwave for 50 seconds, or until chocolate chips are melted. you have to stir them a little because chocolate holds its shape in the microwave. Viola, amazingness! eat it hot, right out of the mug, with a spoon. fudgy, warm brownie, yummy chocolate deliciousness.

I added hot fudge to the recipe and it made an awesome lava cake!!! I served it lightly dusted with powdered sugar and some ice cream and no one would have guessed I cooked it in the microwave!!! Thank you.

in Japan u can buy a cake mix that does excatly this its called Moko Moko cake or something, it comes in vanilla and caramel flavors too, also on the back they have other ways to use the mixture like putting it on top of a slice of bread and cooking it in one of those mini toaster ovens to make fancy french toast, but i’m sooo glad that i can now make this with stuff from out my cupboard, certainly a lot cheaper than importing it from japan ^___^

hmmm i was really kinda excited when i just started it out. but as i didn’t really have all the ingredients at home and i wanted to try it right away, i made certain modifications to the recipe.
i used Milo powder instead of cocoa powder, but Milo tastes chocolaty enough for me. also, i used all-purpose flour instead of cake flour.
as i don’t have a microwave oven at home, i used the conventional toaster instead. the duration required for the cake to bake took a lot longer (20 mins!) even at the highest temperature setting…
last but not least, the taste of the cake is… OK. not the kind of spectacular chocolate cake, but still good enough, especially with this simple recipe.
but really, 3 tablespoons of oil is WAY TOO MUCH.
I really don’t understand people who post comments before trying a recipe. I enthusiastically followed the directions exactly as written. Mine looked just like the pictures. Unfortunately, I don’t think this cake is very good. I didn’t find the flavor or texture appealing. I took a couple bites and tossed the rest. Sorry for the negative comment, just one cook’s opinion.
i tried it in a large square mug turned out ok only cooked for 2 1/2 minute i was a little plain on its own got a simple choc sauce recipe to go on it tasted much better

I had to substitute six spoonfuls of chocolate-milk-drink powder instead of the 4 spoonfuls of sugar and 2 of cocoa because I had no cocoa but even so it is a success and very good!
Like another poster wrote, I could have substituted butter for oil and I expect it would be even more delicious!

I don’t suppose this could also be made with all purpose flour? I don’t happen to have cake flour, and buying it just for adorable five-minute cakes seems a bit of a waste.
Just tried this with my 6 year old daughter. She was so proud of herself for making her very first cake by herself. And it didn’t taste half bad either! Next time we’ll add something to it like a few chocolate chips or pieces of strawberry or raspberry. Excellent idea, thanks!

Ive made this cake and it is just simply scrumpsious. Ive decided to steal the idea and and serve it in my resteraunt, which is situated in bromsley. I think my customers will particularly like the novelty of the cake. I will probably serve some variations – maybe with a choice of raspberry sauce, chocolate chips or cream. I thought this was great but I only used 2 tablespoons of oil next time I will try just one tablespoon of oil. Tastes really good for a quick fix and the kids loved it. If there was one thing I would change it would be the name, it should be called chocolate pudding as it has the texture of a steamed pudding rather than a cake. By pudding I mean a cake placed in a bowl, covered and steamed and not what the US refer to as pudding as they are two different things.
While I was cooking, it smelled like mac n cheese!!!!! It was horible too!!!!!!!!!!!! I will not be trying that again. Sorry, but no thanks!

well imm 15 today and were dirt poor and didnt have money to get a cake so this worked great it take good to me though i can taste the egg alot but its goods
saw this recipe a few months ago and tagged it. got around to trying it today and i just used all purpose flour instead of cake flour and it turned out fine. a bit plain though. so we added some chocolate syrup and whipped cream and wow. a masterpiece! i think i’ll try some variations next time.

As a retired chef, I realize that I am rather picky about foods but this has to be the poorest excuse for cake that I have ever seen.
Cake flour is made from a very soft wheat with very little gluten. Adding baking powder to regular flour creates self-rising flour which can also me purchased at the store and found alongside cake flour, bread flour, whole wheat flour, etc.

I did an absolute bodge job of it, with the wrong ingredients, and a mug twice the size, managed to knock over a bottle of oil onto my parents carpet, yet STILL it came out alright, and tasted grrreatt! Some of the surplus that spilt over made a nice sauce as well…

Just a quick tip.. if you don’t have cake flour on hand, just measure out one cup of reg flour and replace 2 tablespoons of it with cornstarch and mix well. Voila! Cake flour. Just made this little micro wondercake and it was really good. Totally satified my PMS craving! Thanks.

I had a craving for cake, and I didn’t want to heat the whole house up so I googled Microwave cake… this one looked interesting so I decided to give it a try.
I used self rising flour instead of cake flour, half and half instead of milk, and olive oil instead of regular vegetable oil. It was fantastic… I will definately use this recipe again!

Oh my gawd. I love chocolate gooey cake. I tried this recipe and geeeeze… it is absolutely one of the worst tasting and bad consistancies I have ever had. In fact I sent it to a couple of friends to try it cause I thought maybe it was me…but nope. it sucks. we all tried it and even made a few changes… it’s rubbery, it’s not moist. and if you’re not careful the egg whites can look like scrambled rubber if they’re not totally blended in. I’m used to good food.. …and this wasn’t even a close 5th. I’ve tasted fast food desserts that are better. And I hate fast food.
really good make sure you really stir it up cause the egg will cook by itself and i got flour at the bottom of mine soo really stir it and you also can use cappicino mix my friend tried it and said it was goood =]

There is nothing wrong with the recipe, I just tried it and is was great! You must be doing something wrong or you have a lower/higher powered microwave (I only cooked mine for 2 mins as I have a strong microwave).
I don’t care what anyone says, this is a delicious cake! I just found this recipe through the search engine Dogpile, but a local food editor had published a similar recipe in her column a week or so ago, and I’ve been making it since that came out. Her recipe was identical, except that it also included a teaspoon of vanilla and 3 tablespoons of chocolate chips.
I’ve taken the recipe one step further by substituting 1.5 tablespoons of the chips w/1.5 tablespoons of chopped nuts and replacing 1/2 of the cocoa with instant coffee or espresso powder (which, according to a certain Food Network celebrity, really brings out the flavor of chocolate). I’ve even gone so far as to douse the top of the cake with Grand Marnier or Amaretto before serving it for an extra-special flavor!
Each and every time I’ve made the cake, it’s turned out perfectly! My entire family love it. The only thing I do dislike about it is this: when I go to remove it from the cup, it all-too-often falls apart! Even if I flood the cup with food release spray, inevitably some of it sticks to the bottom of the cup. Other than that, this is really a wonderful dessert that I highly recommend.

I have made the cake twice now and find that the second time when I added some chopped pecans it was the best. The first time I didn’t add the choc chips either so both of those things made a big difference the second time around.
I divide mine up with my partner in a bowl and I add a scoop of ice cream and a slurp of caramel topping. Its a great fast dessert.
Microwave cake comes out much better if you just leave out the egg and use water! Assemble all the dry ingredients, and instead of using egg, use water. Just add enough water until the mixture becomes like regular cake batter. Stick in the microwave and enjoy! The texture comes out much more fluffy and less rubbery.

We added vanilla but not the choc chips.
Because our microwave is old and doesn’t turn any more we stopped it a couple of times to check it and took it out when it looked cooked and didn’t rise any more.
We got a chocolate sponge pudding (anyone remember Heinz selling one in a can) with its own sauce.
Not really a cake but a lovely quick dessert for the two of us to share.

AWESOME! I am a college student and I tried this! Only problem use CAKE FLOUR! Regular white flour made it too heavy much better with Cake flour. Or if not possibly sift regular white flour into finer flour.

Okay guys…i feel bad for bashing the cake recipe….the one i got is just like this only like one guy said above that it adds 3 tablespoons of chocolate chips and a splash of vanilla (if you want to). well As I was leaving the site i noticed it said to use Cake flour…not all purpose flour. The one i made just said FLOUR. So, all though i won’t try this again but maybe using the CAKE FLOUR would of made it turn out a LITTLE better.

I guess you can make it in a normal oven? Maybe just not in a mug, and also, it would take longer – but I haven’t tried this yet, so you might have to experiment a little
Awesome. The kids will love being able to make their own cake. They also can make it to their liking by adding chocolate chips, butterscotch chips or mocha chips, vanilla, hazelnut or whatever their little hearts desire. Single serve cake is great too for your diet.

I remember trying to make cake this way. I kept it in the microwave too long and it ended up having a leathery texture, so be careful.
I liked it! No it’s not as good as a “real” cake but for something you can throw together in literally 5 minutes, it’s a keeper. I agree with others about adding vanilla, salt, and especially chocolate chips. Ice cream and/or whipped cream alongside is pretty critical too. Thanks for the great treat! My kids laughed their heads off when they saw the cake rising out of the mug inside the microwave.

I added ½ t instant coffee and 2 T Chocolate chips to ours. I placed the saucer on top of the mug and inverted it and it came out in one piece. Once cooled, I sliced it into 4 pieces. I also melted 2 T of chocolate chips in the microwave with a little half and half to make a ganache. The cake is sort of heavy—like a brownie—but it has good flavor and isn’t too sweet. It would be good with some ice cream, too.

Tried this recipe with 3 3/4 tbsp all-purpose flour and 1/2 tbsp corn starch, it worked pretty well but I would describe the resulting cake as a bit hardier than average. It still tasted excellent though. I recommend adding white chocolate cihps if you feel it’s not sweet enough, I did this and the result was delicious
So freakishly delicious! Though I did it with plain flour, so it didn’t actually rise much. It was still very tasty, much like lava cakes (mmmm…5 minute lava cake! Now I just gotta figure out the chocolate-lava). I guess I could throw a little bit of baking powder in there, though.

I tried it with my kids they were proud and it tasted good.
I used regular flour, added 1 teaspoon of baking powder
used brown sugar and 2,5 tablespoon of butter instead of oil.
Will put more sugar next time and try with a bit more butter.
The first result was great looking I used a bowl instead of a mug.
Next time I will put a bit of butter in the bowl to better be able to remove the cake from the bowl.

Just made this, and replaced the cocoa with sour cream. Turned out v. well, especially when I drizzled it with mocha from Starbucks (bahaha secret ingredients). It’s a bit pancake-like, though that might be an overabundance of moisture from the sour cream.

I don’t how to check what the wattage on my microwave is so that may be the problem, but it came out mushy where it was touching the cup. *shrugs* It was a cheap enough experiment.
Update: I cooked the mushy cake in the on a cookie tray in the oven for 10 minutes on 350. The result is pretty decent.

Cute, and it works. The only trouble is the taste is much too mild for me, but some slight changes to the recipe would probably make it taste more cake-like, such as a tiny bit of vanilla, water, and a little more sugar and/or cocoa. It would make an excellent tea cake though.

Instead of using oil and eggs, substitute by using 3 to 4 tablespoons of mayonnaise, that also cuts down the fat from using oil.

I just tried it and it worked pretty good. I didn’t have any cocoa powder though so I had to alter my recipe a bit. Instead of cocoa powder I used and extra Tbspn of flour and and extra Tbspn of sugar. Though I didn’t actually use sugar either, I used Splenda. Then I added 1/4 tsp of vanilla extract. It tasted a little eggy, but was otherwise just fine.

Me and my friend tried this cake and OMG it was disgusting It was the nastiest cake I have ever tried you guys act like this is the God of the cakes.
I’ve been wanting to try this for a year, and I finally just did! i looked up a quick frosting recipe because i expected it to be dry, but the frosting turned out as melted chocolate butter with balls of confection sugar in the bottom. so i poured the chocolate butter over it anyway. The cake was delicious (but a bit dry, as I expected) and the chocolate butter fixed that.
All in all, a good experience, and I’ve just added butter and milk to the grocery list so I can make it again.
BTW – I didn’t have milk so i substituted for a little water. And used olive oil. It worked fine.

I didn’t have milk so I substituted with 2 tablespoons plain yogurt and 1 tablespoon water. It turned out super moist and almost custardy. Oh I also added some powdered vanilla chai tea mix, so it was chocolate-vanilla-chai flavored. Yum!
Keep in mind: 3 tablespoons of oil has almost 45 grams of fat!! That’s not including any of the other ingredients!

The only problem is that this is 760 calories per serving… Yikes. I substituted 8-10 packets of splenda for the sugar, apple sauce for the oil, and removed the yoke from the egg added about a 8th of a teaspoon of baking powder for some lift and dropped almost 400 calories from the recipe.
Hi I’ve tried this and it is awful. Needs way more sugar. Just eat the batter. Not hating, I’ve seen this recipe before. Just go get some cake mix.

this is absoloutly amazing! just tried it. was very sceptical but literally took 5 minutes and had a lovely cake. only problem is its a bit awkward mixing in a cup but making in a bowl would solve that problem! tastes lovely. will definitely be using it again in future! thanks!!!

I tried this in a yellow cake/vanilla version, same ingredients but I left out the cocoa powder. The texture was erm…interesting. I think I should have left out the yolk or only used half of an egg. The recipe calls for a lot of egg for how little dry ingredients there are. Otherwise, it came out well. No microwave mess and very little cleanup. Genius idea!
Is no Baking Powder or raising agent required?

OMG! i tried the cake on its own it was a bot dry but then i added cream and i swear to god i died and went to heaven next time ill keep it in the mug thugh coz when i took it out it went all dry !

We did this in our flat! (At uni) it worked really well, now spreading across the campus! We had to use a glass, but it still worked. Probably because it wasn’t in for ages so didn’t crack…had to be careful picking it up though!
this is ok, but it wasnt realy a cake.
Made this twice. Second time mixed everything in a bowl and then transferred to a mug sprayed with cooking spray. This made clean-up easier and cake came out easier from mug. First time, probably didn’t get mixed 100% due to contours of mug which then didn’t allow it to slide out of the mug. Taste was identical both times and everyone in the house liked it!

A friend just emailed the link to this page so I straight up and made it.
Australian recipes don’t call for using Cake Flour in their ingredients usually. What is usually called for is either a Wholemeal or a Plain Flour or Self Raising Flour.
I used “Self Raising Flour” as the substitute for the cake flour the recipe calls for..
Result?
Success!
I sprayed the cup with spray oil as a precaution to stop the cake mix from sticking to the inside and everything turned out fantastically well.
ps Next time I’ll make some Chocolate Icing (Frosting) to go with it

wow great stuff, not all I would need is a tiny little package of frosting and I would be set!
I cut mine in half upon removal from the cup and spread a few mm thick layer of chocolate spread before putting them back together. The spread melted into the sponge and made it really soft and chewy. Stops the centre becoming dry.
i love this recipie, and all of the variations that i found in the comments, so i wrote a few of them down and i’ll be sharing this with my friends, because like me they live with at least one other person that is trying to stick to a diet, and so they can’t keep things like cookies or other dessert foods lying around the kitchen, so this is perfect for all of us.
FAIL!!! I made this just the way you said, but I forgot to count in the fact that my microwave is extremely powerful thus resulting in DEATH!!! Seriously, when I opened the microwave a ball of yellow smoke erupted from within, somehow me and my sister carried it outside. Guess what? IT’S STILL SMOLDERING! God, I’m an awful cook! XD

I live in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. I received this recipe from a friend of mine on March 5, 2009 (the 17th anniversary of my 39th birthday!) and promptly forwarded the email to all my contacts so they could share birthday cake with me! I also took the ingredients in to work and had birthday cake with the staff. I used all purpose flour and butterscotch chips because I didn’t have any chocolate chips. It came out amazing! We all loved it. Thank you so much for this recipe. I am going to try going half and half with chocolate chips and chopped pecans. This tastes just like fudge brownie!! Thanks again!! Today I got the recipe and tried it. I used regular all purpose flour. It was delicious. I didn’t add the chocolate chips. I needed to use a bigger mug. I think I’ll try a bowl instead of a mug next time, just for a variety. Thanks Dizzy for your ingenuity! It is wonderful!

Tried it, but with sunflower oil instead of cooking oil and hot chocolate drink powder instead of cocoa powder. Sufficed to say, it was the most disgusting thing I have ever eaten. It had the taste of chocolate alright, but had the consistency of a kidney.

The rubbery problem some people have had is due to the eggs. Microwave cakes don’t need eggs. And yes, the flavor needs amping up… a sweeter and more complex flavor. So try this (American measures):
1/4 cup flour
1/4 cup sugar
2 tbs cocoa
1/4 tsp salt
1/2 tsp baking powder
Mix dry ingredients separately (I know, one more dish than the original but it makes a difference!)
1/4 cup milk
2 tbs melted butter
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
1/2 tsp vinegar
Mix together in the mug (make sure the butter stays melted, you can heat it up a bit if you need to). Add the dry ingredients to the mug and microwave (took me 3 minutes).
It doesn’t rise as high as the original but it tastes better… sweeter, more chocolatey, and more tender. The vinegar and baking powder react to make it rise. I used apple cider vinegar and you couldn’t taste it.
Rather strange consistancy, but I am a pastry chef and like to experiment… so I am used to the baked cake. It just has a strange texture, not like a real cake, so I don’t really like it that much… but I guess it’s good if you are really desperate for something chocolatey.

omg i LOVE IT! but i would reccomend pouring some chocolate syrup into the middle of the batter (and not mixing it in) before you put it in the microwave. -without it its kindof eggy.

I just finished making *and eating!* it. I found I didn’t have any cocoa so I simply added a few drops of vanilla and it tasted great. This is definately something I would recommend if you don’t have any cocoa or if you don’t like chocolate cake.

I don’t know if the quantities issue has been put to rest as I haven’t read all the comments but I’m in the UK and found that using tablespoons was far too much for one mug. I did it in a bowl using tablespoons the first time and while it tasted great the consistency was a bit odd, sort of like sponge pudding. So the second time I switched to dessert spoons but used the same amount of egg (one medium) and it came out a lot more like cake and wasn’t as sickly. I also followed peoples advice and went for 2 spoons of oil which seemed like plenty.

I made it and loved it. I drizzled it with a little bourbon, then I drizzled the next one with amaretto. It reminded me of baba au rhum. It’s fun to do for friends.
Want a vanilla frosting? This only takes an extra minute. Make it while the cake cools:
4 tbsp icing sugar
1 tbsp milk
1 tsp margarine
1/2 tsp vanilla
Mix all ingredients in a bowl. Add more icing sugar if you prefer a thicker frosting or more milk or vanilla if you prefer a more runny frosting. It’s lovely on this cake!
try using applesause instead of oil it tastes great!!

Next or the first time you make it, Put this on it:
1. Melt Chocolate chips n tupperwear, then after the cake is done, melt it in the microwave for about one minute, check about ever 10 seconds.
2. Juice some raspberries and add about one table spoon of sugar mix it and pour on cake.
OMG, this receipe is FABULOUS! I stumbled across the printed version while housesitting for my father-in-law’s workmate, but forgot to write it down, and so googled it as soon as I realised…tastes DELICIOUS! I have one a day now, but with a slight modification – a table spoon of cocoa and a tablespoon of coffee, so it’s a mocha cake.
I was so excited to try this – very disappointed. Texture was weird. An ever better way to get a chocolate fix in less than 5 minutes is to just open a bar of good quality chocolate. Then eat immediately. Much tastier!!!!

Great!! I was craving something sweet but had nothing at home and tried this cake as soon as I found it. I never use milk, so I added 2 Tablespoons (or maybe it was 3) of coconut cream powder and added 3 Tablespoons of water instead of the milk. My microwave is over 20 years old (750 Watts), so I cooked the cake in a big mug for 5 minutes, 4.5 would have been enough.
I ate it right out of the mug. True, it’s a bit rubbery but who cares if you are lazy and want some cake without the work and all the bowl cleaning right now. If I would have had them I might have poured some canned fruit over it, well next time.

Being in the US I knew this would be dry with 4T. I used it anyway. Used 3T applesauce and no oil. I only had large eggs so I whisked the egg in a bowl, made 2 mugs and divided the egg between the 2.
It was rubbery as I expected it would be but very chocolatey with the chocolate chips added.
I thought it was very acceptable for such a quick recipe. My boys split one and thought it was great as an after supper snack with some vanilla ice cream.
I just finished making it and it’s pretty good for five minutes of preparation. A bit rubbery and gooey on the bottom, but it still tastes awesome. It looks really fudgey on the inside. I made some quick cream cheese icing to go on top too.
I used two tablespoons and one tablespoon of oil instead of just three tablespoons of oil because I didn’t like how many calories this would have.
My microwave is around 18 years old and it’s about 700 watts so I cooked it for 4 minutes. It probably would have been better if I used a better microwave.
I made up ziplock bags with the dry ingredients and posted the other ingredients inside my kitchen cabinet…when in the mood, all I have to do is get out a bag, mug and the moist ingredients and I’m off..saves even more time this way!!!

I’ve tried both versions of this recipe (the original and the “wacky cake” adaption). And have come up with my own recipe. My experience has been that all microwaves are NOT the same, and those getting poor results may need to cut down (or increase) the time the cake is in the microwave.
In my microwave, 3 minutes is too long for the original recipe. The cake is sponge-y and while tasty, the texture is off-putting. In my microwave, the “wacky cake” (the one with vinegar) version overflows the cup (not a problem as I use a silicone liner on the bottom of my microwave — easier to clean than taking out the turntable).
Here’s how I’ve changed the recipe — but again, everyone needs to find their own cooking time . . . a toothpick inserted should come out fairly clean — the cake will continue to cook a little after it comes out of the microwave.
1/4* cup flour (I used all-purpose)
1/4* cup white sugar
2 TBL cocoa (I used Ghiradelli)
3 TBL mini chocolate chips (essential!)
Mix together in a bowl
1 egg
2 TBL melted butter
2 TBL milk
Mix together and add to dry ingredients.
I divided this mixture into two small ramekins (I had better results with these than cooking in a mug and already portion controlled) and put in MY microwave for only 2 minutes (your time may vary).
A toothpick inserted came out clean.
This did not have the spong-yness of the cake in the mug at 3 minutes . . . It was a very nice cakey texture (and excellent with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and a glass of milk)
I don’t know if I would get the same results with oil as with butter, I will try that, but these results were excellent — again with the shorter cook time so that the egg in the mixture didn’t have time to get rubbery.
I think the mini chocolate chips are essential, but not everyone would agree. I also would like to try the version without the cocoa (but might still add the chocolate chips!)
*BTW 4 TBL (in the original recipe) equals 1/4 cup . . . just an easier measure to use 1/4 cup for me.

4 Tbs flour
2 Tbs sugar
1 Tbs cocoa
1 egg
2 Tbs milk
1 Tbs oil
make it in the same way as the original, but 3 min is too long in my microwave. 2 min is better

It worked ok. But I wasn’t sweet enough for me. And it kinda felt like I was eating a giant pancake. Maybe thats because I don;t have cake flour. And maybe I did something else wrong. but still really cool!

uh.. yummy!!!! as soon as i made it i sent a text to my friend telling HIM to make it.. worked fine for me.. i didn’t have cake flour so i used 3 1/2 tablespoons self-raising flour and 1/2 tablespoon cornflour. worked fine!! all u ppl complaining, plz step back and see that its a microwave cake in 5 mins. its not a masterpeice from michel’s pattiserie so don’t expect it to taste like one!! sheesh!!
Made the kids happy – one drip down the side of the cup but no big overflow – all purpose flour worked ok – 2.5 min in 1200 watt microwave or it will get too dry – can’t compete against “real” cake but it’s a satisfying and fun snack!

I’m getting ready to bake a birthday cake for a friend – as usual, going through recipes has given me a bad craving.
This seemed like a neat, fast way to feed my chocolate soul! I goofed and threw in 4 tablespoons of cocoa (realized it right away, but from the photos I figured for my tastes I’d need to increase it, anyway). Also added a dash of salt – I ran out of vanilla, but normally I’d add a bit of that. Instead, I added a dash of almond extract and some strawberry flavoring… almost ate all the batter raw!
Some people commented that it’s better after it cools – I wouldn’t know. I ate the whole thing before it could cool down!
This was great for a quick munchy attack. Granted, not the same as one baked in a regular oven, but it came out really, really good just the same.
Hey – as far as those who have commented about this being very unhealthy… come on, now! It’s CHOCOLATE CAKE! If you want healthy – make a salad.

Oh – forgot to add – I used regular, all purpose flour. Cake flour (which is actually made from a different type of wheat) would make it lighter, but for I’m saving the more expensive cake flour for the fancy birthday cake I’ll be making tonight.

Working from home, need chocolate boost, this is just the thing. I added a few peices of white and milk chocolate and it melted through the cake as it cooked and what sunk to the bottom melted, so that when you turned it out you had lovely chocolate sauce on the top.

I made this following the recipe and it was ok, nice with vanilla ice cream. Second time I made it I used margarine (melted) instead of oil and only 2 1/2 tablespoons, I used 3 1/2 tablespoons of milk. Used 4 1/2 tablespoons of sugar, half a tablespoon of vanilla.
I like my additions. Really this is good no matter what.

I often substitute applesauce for oil in cake recipes – they stay moist but reduce fat and calories. I want to try that substitution in this microwave recipe. (note to Nikki from Austria: your message was very clear!)

I’ve made this 3 times now, and have not been disappointed once! You really have to stir, stir and stir some more so that the ingredients incorporate well and you don’t end up with scrambled eggs, or as a previous poster mentioned, “the smell of macaroni and cheese.” Actually come to think of it, I’m not even sure how that person managed that.
Anyway, I add about half a teaspoon of cinnamon and half a teaspoon of vanilla and top it with chocolate syrup and whipped cream. It is SO good, and perfect for when I’m craving homemade-tasting chocolate cake!
I made this except I substituted the cocoa power for cinnamon and vanilla since I didn’t have any…it was a coffee cake in a coffee mug! Thanks for the great recipe

I tried it and it worked. Though you may have to decrease the timing. All microwaves are different, so i would put it down to 2 and half minutes or so. I added a bit of vanilla extract to it as well. You may need a bigger mug or a different container so that it won’t jump over board like my cake did and try to grease the mug a little.
Also If you don’t have cake flour hidden in your shelf, all you need:
2tblsp of cornstarch
1/2tsp of baking powder
flour
a sifter
and 1 cup
Get the 1 cup and but in cornstarch and baking powder. Then fill the rest of the cup with flour. After, sift the mixture about 12 times and you have cake flour! ^_^

When I first tried this recipe out,it came out very bland and kinda weird for me. The second time I tried it,it was much better, after changing it a bit.
First, I decreased the time to about 2 and a half minutes. Although I used All-purpose flour (which is probably why my cake is a bit stiff), I added give or take 2-3 teaspoons of Cinnamon Sugar and a bit of Vanilla extract to give it some more flavor. You’ll probably have to use a big mug too, since mine spilled over onto the microwave. Otherwise, its really yummy!
This tasted really good when i made it better than oven cake. a cross between a souffle and a cake. i put a bit of vanilla extract and cinnamon in. i used australian tablespoons and it fit into a standard 250ml mug. i have 1200 watt microwave and cooked for 3 mins and stopped and started occassionally. put a saucer underneath just in case it overflows.
This recipe is fantastic i will defentally ry it again. lovely fast and effective way to make cakes if you are late for dinner party.

For those who are finding this dry, I recommend cutting down on the baking time. First time I made it, I followed all the instructions except I was out of milk so I used milk powder and water. I cooked it at 3 minutes like instructed. Came out a little hard. This time I had milk but was out of cocoa powder. I made as instructed but I left out cocoa, added an extra tablespoon of sugar, and cooked it for 2 minutes. Then I through some strawberries on top. Kind of tasted like sponge cake. Personally I liked it. So if it’s too dry for your taste, try cutting down the cooking time. Remember you can always cook it longer, so maybe start with a low time and work your way up until you find your perfect cake. Happy cooking. :]

Me and my friend literally just used this recipe. It came out with a little hollow space in the middle, but we figured it was just because we used a bowl and not a mug. We’ve decided it needs a litle more cocoa than directed, so she’s re-making it. It really wasn’t that bad and fun to make <3

A friend of mine gave me the link to this several months ago, and I’ve made this cake several times since. The first time, I used a coffee mug, and it didn’t turn out the way I had hoped. Since then, I’ve been using bowls. A couple of weeks ago, instead of using cocoa powder, I used a few packets of True Lemon. I loved it!
I just made this 3 times and it was terrible, we had to spit it out. It is missing something,,maybe more vanilla or more sugar. Do not really care to try it again because why waste my ingredients. Any suggestions to making it taste better? Then maybe I’ll try it again.

shoot. something went terribly wrong when I tried it. (That’s what I get for manipulating the ingredients) I used those balls of cocoa that you have to scrape, and since it was already sweetened, I didn’t put as much sugar (I used approximately 1/3 the amount of sugar I needed). Its consistency is something between cake and pudding, leaning more towards pudding. I don’t know if I’ll try again…maybe I will, seeing as all these people could get it and really liked it.

You can also make this with a quarter of a banana instead of using egg. I was out of eggs and banana makes a great substitute. Tastes great too!
wow. i replaced 1 spoon of sugar with a spoon of golden syrup and oil for butter. tastes pretty good, really light and not dry at all, but it is slightly rubbery. maybe because i used self raising flour & baking powder. still, it’s impressive!

My mom, my sister, and I’ve been using this recipe for a couple years, and we all think it’s pretty good. It’s a bit like chewing a sponge soaked in dark chocolate as far as the texture goes, but it’s definitely delicious if you ignore that fact, and add chocolate chips into the mix and a bit of whipped cream on top.
Also, we found that the mug was a bit too small for the end result, so we use a bowl, and that works perfectly for us.

I just tried for the first time. As far as the sponge texture, why not just call it a chocolate sponge cake!
I jazzed it up with 2 T butter + cocoa, added powdered sugar and drops of milk to get the consistency of icing. If you get too much milk and it is runny, don’t worry! You now have the Molten Lava Sponge Cake, enjoy.
Also, it is perfect for 2 people.

I’ve tried cake-in-a-mug recipes twice, and I didn’t like it both times. It’s too dense and oily… but it tasted better with icing.

This is one of my favorite “go to” recipes when you just need something sweet. However, if you use unsweetened cocoa – it can be a little blah. I add in a pack of Sweet & Low (trying to keep the sugar to a min) and it makes it SO much better. I also add a little dissolved instant coffee crystals in the mix giving it just a hint of some wonderful flavor but no overwhelming. About a teaspoon of instant coffee crystals. ENJOY!
Needed a cake fix and this did it! Texture wasn’t fabulous but stuck a few pieces of lindt choccie in the middle which melted straight away and turned it into a lovely melting middle pudding. Best served with ice cream…

No kidding, it actually works. It’s a little dry, so add some hot fudge or chocolate sauce. I would also reccomend putting a paper plate underneith the cup because it overflows a little. It works really well for a one on one movie night. TRY IT!

This is a great recipe for those cold winter nights with a bit of cream poured into the centre… I’ve put some grated choc in the mix and just adds that little bit extra decadence…mmmm! better than cooking a normal sized cake and having the temptation of it sitting in front of you ’til its gone! Of course it does. This process, no matter what device is used to do it, is called “cooking”. Your oven, toaster, grill, and waffle iron all “change molecules” as well.
instead of 100% power try baking at 60% for 4min then combi-3 for 1min. it will not be dry.

after knowing, and trying this (*got the recipe via email a year ago) I experimented with a brownie mix. It was a small one/ Duncan Hines (*cost a buck @ Alberson’s on sale). I halfed the mix, added an egg and two teaspoons of butter. Cooked it for 3 and a half or 4 minutes.. I forget.. but it was all puffy, so I took it out. I didn’t want it to get dry.

There is no danger cooking with microwaves. Look things up before you type them. Microwaves are called so because they transmit micro radio waves though the food exciting the water molecules thus creating heat.

WOW this recipe changed my life…lol. I use butter instead of oil, and I thought it tasted too eggy the first time so I just use egg whites now (makes it healthier, too) and I added some chocolate chips. It tastes AWESOME with the chips, but it’s still great either way. Make sure to stir it REALLY well because the first two times I made it there were little pockets of dry mix on the bottom..not so good. Finally I can bake!! (haha, sad)

I tried this before, and it tasted like a wet sponge. I was extremely careful this time, and the top half tasted fine while the bottom wasn’t mixed evenly
It does taste alright though. I like my normal cake better, though…
Comes out much more moist if you only go for 2 minutes in my microwave, 1 min 30 sec in my mom’s. If you go for the full 3 it comes out burned tasting and hard- eww. Also make sure you have a BIG mug- because it will overflow all over the place- sometimes a small bowl is better… but always make sure the container is microwave safe! I suspect that #21 dana did not make sure her mug was and it cracked!

Wow this is great! Hats off to the one who invented this cake! Just tried it, and it’s not bad at all, and when you are watching your weight, it’s a nice alternative for less temptation to eat more. It’s satisfying and filling.
I have modified the ingredients for those who are watching their weight.
4 Tbsp. Flour
2 packets of Stevia
1 Tbsp. Carob Powder
1 Tbsp. Ovaltine (OR you could leave out the carob powder and just do 2 Tbsp. Ovaltine)
1 Egg
3 Tbsp. Low fat milk
2 Tbsp. Olive oil
1 Tbsp. Water
A dash of cinnamon
1 MUG to cook in.
Cook 3 minutes in microwave on high (100%)
Let stand a few minutes. Flip out onto a saucer plate, and microwave 30 seconds more.
And follow the rest of the instructions given above.
This, on the spur of the moment, version has less fat, sugar, oil, and guilt
Will be testing it out more to see if I can improve it even more, and make it even more healthier.

Great recipe. But if you pour (1/4 boiling water, 1tblesp cocoa ana 3 tblesp sugar) over the mixture before you cook you make a great self saucing one.

I think I commented before but I’m back.
Just a couple things I tried:
-Used self-raising flour, works fine!
-Used soy milk, works fine!
-I add an extra spoon of milk, as I find it quite dry otherwise
-Instead of sugar and cocoa, since I don’t keep cocoa powder in the cupboard, I substituted 6tbls of Cadbury’s drinking chocolate (the hot cocoa mix you add to milk rather than water, the water kind will contain dried milk and won’t work as a substitute). The ingredients for it are mainly sugar and cocoa and it works out very well.
-add liberal amounts of Betty Crocker choc frosting!
-a friend said she used jam instead of sugar and it was nice that way too

This tastes disgusting because of the oil. You can substitute the oil for an extra large egg plus some water till you get the right consistancy. Also, cook it slowly in the microwave, checking every 30 seconds so that the centre doesnt go hard, infact, i found if I cook it for 2 minutes, it turns into a lovely pudding/fondant with a gooey middle….yum

In the recipe that I got you do NOT need to use cake flour regular flour is what it called for and it also called for a splash of vanilla and 3 taablespoons chocolate chips (0ptional). It was delicious. Although maybe I am slow because it took me slightly more than 5 minutes.
I saw this on Rachel Ray two days ago . I just tried it…it was really fun for the kids and it was also tasty. Not used to the cocoa flavor…always preferred chocolate…but it was good. i would love to try other flavors. My first mug cake was hard in the middle so i put it in for less time and finally perfected it!! Grat idea!!! =o)

Ok, made this just now using all purpose unbleached flour and the rest of the ingredients as stated.
It made a moist eggy cake that was definitely chocolate. I made a chocolate mocha glaze (cocoa powder, powdered sugar and coffee and cinnamon) to put on it and it was a nice touch. I used a tall coffee mug and didn’t spill over at all, it just about filled it perfectly. It doesn’t have the exact texture of a regular cake, more of a muffin-y texture, but still good for all that!
I wish I had found this a few days ago when I was craving chocolate cake because I made a whole cake and it was gone in 3 days (there are only 3 of us here, bad bad bad!!!) A single serve cake like this would have saved me a lot of calories over the course of those days because it would have gotten the craving out of the way and I wouldn’t have pesky tempting cake laying around!
Some things I think I’ll do differently next time- mix it better! I had a bit of unmixed dry ingredients in the bottom. I’d definitely like to figure out a slightly lower calorie version of this, I think I’ll try it with a bit less oil and just use an eggwhite instead of a whole egg. I also think I saw someone say that applesauce can be subbed for some or all of the oil? I think a pinch of salt and some vanilla extract would help the flavor (or even almond or rum extract?) I was also thinking that I could use a liquer for the glaze or even a little in place of the milk (Khalua cake anyone?) I am glad that I shared this with my son, too much for one person!
All in all, not bad at all and nice with my morning coffee (chocolate cake for breakfast, what would my mother think?!?!)

I just had to try this and found I didn’t have any flour so I put two slices of wholemeal bread in the liquidiser and added all the other ingredients.
Result! Actually it’s quite nice with the slightly wholemealy texture. I put a little chocolate spread on top as icing and it looks very professional.

Had it with ice cream and hot chocolate sauce (melted chocolate with a dash of cream). Made with 2tbls oil and 4tbls milk, dash of vanilla essence and split mixture to 2 little bowls, 2.5 mins in microwave. Lovely!

Add 3 tablespoons of chocolate chips and a splash of vanilla, and it’s absolutely wonderful.
I have no idea why some of these people don’t know what a tablespoon is–it’s a very common cooking measurement. 3 teaspoons = 1 tablespoon. Use real measuring spoons, not a spoon from your table.

Hi guys, someone asked for a white cake, since mine is vegan version feel free to replace the banana with whichever fruit puree or an egg. Rise in this cake is less than that shown in the chocolate cake. Mine looked more like a muffin.
4 Tablespoons cake flour
4 Tablespoons Brown sugar
1.5 Tablespoons vanilla puddding Mix
0.5 Tablespoon cinnamon
1/2 Banana
3 Tablespoons almond milk
3 Tablespoons almond butter
1 Mug
Instructions:
Mix flour, sugar and pudding mix
Smash the banana in a plate with a fork
Spoon in the smashed banana
Pour in almond milk and butter, and mix well
Put in microwave for 4 minutes on maximum power (1000watt)
Wait until it stops rising and sets in the mug
Tip contents out of mug onto saucer and enjoy

ive made this cake a bunch of times so here are some tips:
~DONT use olive oil. it makes it taste dry
~i had yummier results when i used powdered sugar instead
~MIX WELL!!!! if not, you will have clumps of flour and thats kinda gross
~i dont measure the cocoa when i make it, just throw in a heaping
~This takes more than five minutes…but is reallllly delicious
~put a plate under the mug when you microwave it!!! just in case the batter spills a little, which does happen
this cake was not phenominal, i personally prefer real cake, but this is easier, quicker, and more fun to make! for what it is, this cake is amazing! good luck!! feel free to experiment!!!

This is the 2nd time I made this. It is perfectly delicious. And no, you cannot use olive oil in it-yuk. Love the idea of the frosting on top making it like a lava cake!! This has to be fattening enough, but wow what a treat every now and then. I made it before in a mug and the mug needed to be bigger, as it spilled over, so this time I used a bowl and it came out easily when inverted. I love this little recipe!! I like that pic link showing it with powdered sugar and rasperries too. This is so neat! You follow exactly, you can’t screw it up unless your microwave doesn’t rotate or something.

Sbstitute 3/4 C of cake mix for all dry ingredients. Add 3 T water, 2 T oil and 1 egg. Grease and flour the cup/bowl. Microwave 2 min 15 sec to 2 min 30 sec. A lot quicker than mixing up all those ingredients.

I just tried this and wasn’t a bit disappointed. My microwave is 1100 watts so I cooked the cake 3 minutes and it was perfectly fine. Satisfied the old tastebuds! I think if using a regular stove oven it would not rise sufficiently and would be rubbery or solid.

I’m guessing that the reason it works for some people and not for others will depend on the mug that you use. Anyone who uses a microwave regularly will have noticed that sometimes the plate is really hot after you’ve cooked something, while it isn’t if you use a different plate. It’s because of the thermal properties of the types of clay used to make the mug. Those mugs made from clay that heats up easily will retain the heat, effectively increasing the cooking temperature and causing the cake to be overcooked or rubbery. Try a different mug or a microwave safe bowl instead.

I just made this and substituted Xylitol (spoon for spoon, but some people think Xylitol is sweeter, so you could try less) Came out pretty good, tasted great, a little dry in the center. Our microwave is 1300 watts so I did it at 70%, which should have been equivalent; but maybe I’ll try tweaking the time and power. My son made it with sugar last night so I saved a piece for him to compare.

This cake is RUBBERY!!! One recipe is 1,200ish calories-this cake is not worth it. It takes OK I guess, but nothing to write home about. Waste of time, calories, and ingredients. Disappointment WILL follow!
Just tried the recipe, the only thing that saved it was all the chocolate chips i dumped in it. its wet, bland and tastes like a microwaved cake, blech. take the extra few minutes to make a real cake, in the oven.

I agree with the comment about using dessert spoons, not table spoons. The cake made a small mess in my microwave, could I cover the bowl next time?? I used 3/4 tsp baking powder to replace the egg, it worked okay. The end result was too sweet, a bit too dry and not chocolatey enough for my taste. I would like to put a banana in it next time, but I don’t know how to adapt the recipe to allow for that. I’d love to use just a normal chocolate cake (or banana chocolate cake) recipe & microwave it. Can I do that?

Another variation: I reduced the oil by one half and then melted 1 1/2 tbs of peanut butter in the microwave. I then poured it on top and mixed it a bit to marbelize before cooking. Soo good!

I think it may have been the mug I was using. It was a very wide big mug. But the second one I used a smaller mug and it came out alright.
I make some whipped cream with a bit of whisky (couldn’t find the vanilla haha) and topped it with a bunch of fresh strawberries!

I warn you, never try this recipe with bananas. I thought, bananas would perfectly fit to the cocoa. So i sliced them into the dough after mixing everything. First: the banana slices have a lesser density than the dough (which, i explain later, was good for me after baking). Second: the dough is not stable anymore. I was lucky that i had a plate under my mug. So after baking, half of the dough was inside the mug and the other half was on the plate. You can not imaging how disgusting this looked. I was so lucky because most of the bananas where on the plate and not in the mug, so i could eat that part without the bananas. And of course it tasted very very good
The part with bananas is now in the trash.

I just tried the recipe for the first time and I absolutely love it. I find it’s much tastier when you add chocolate icing to it though =)
it tastes great and it tastes even better with chocolate chips and caramel bits. you should try it sometime. its really good. if you make the cake with out anything in it, no chocolate chips or any other sweets, its actually healthier than plain pancakes. just a fun fact and a comment.

did this cake with melted margine- not oil it turned out great…also used the whole egg. Planing on using this for Mothers Day gift. Did not add glaze for frosting…it is still very tasty.

I found that recipe to be a bit too dry for me so this is what I changed:
3 tbsp flour
5 tbsp sugar
1 1/2 tbsp cocoa
1 Egg
4 tbsp milk
3 tbsp oil
Coffee liquer or TGIFriday Mudslide or 2 tbsp + instant coffee dissolved
Mix the dry ingredients
Pour in the wet ingredient, mix well
Egg, mix well
Coffee whatever, mix well.
Microwave.
i thought it was ok but there was some problems when i put in the microwave, it exsploded so i had to made another one and that one exploded too so i just ate what was left of it

Add orange zest for a change. And a chocolate orange glaze makes it fit for guests.
If you want vanilla instead of chocolate substitute custard powder (ie Birds) for the cocoa.
I have done that several times and also added orange or lemon zest or extract.

Just tried this…not bad, texture was a bit off…kind of gooey and wet. I added peanut butter though which might have caused that. either way, a nice quick pick me up snack.

What?! I can’t believe that worked! Lovely, I used plain flour, but added 1 teaspoon of bicarb. Also added about 1- teaspoons of honey, and melted some chocolates down as I had no cocoa. Wish I had Chocolate spread to put in the middle! (used a measuring jug instead of a mug, nice cake shape)

try using margarine or butter instead of oil! it tastes 10x better! but if u have no butter or margarine oil is still good! also try cooking it (oil or no oil) for 2 minutes its really nice when u do tht! ENJOY!

I made a few substitutes, turned out a bit gummy but still tasty and definitely lighter on the calories & fat!
- used plain white flour (will try wholewheat next time)
- 2 tbsp raw cane sugar instead of 4 (will try agave next time)
- 3 tbsp egg whites instead of 1 egg
- 3 tbsp applesauce instead of oil
I would do this again when I find myself with a chocolate craving that can’t be curbed!

I have been making a recipe similar to this for some time but I use regular all purpose flour and 1 tsp. vanilla and be sure to use only vegetable oil, olive oil has another taste and it’s not for chocolate cake. It is also good with 1/2 tsp. of cinnnamon in it. Haven’t tried the chips but will do that next. I keep the dry ingredients in small bags for a quick treat, just add the wet ingedients. I have never had this recipe fail so I am thinking it is the watts of the oven, the altitude, or the attitude of those who failed. LOL. It is a great snack.

5 MINUTE CHOCOLATE MUG CAKE
4 tablespoons flour
4 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons cocoa
1 egg
3 tablespoons milk
3 tablespoons oil
3 tablespoons chocolate chips (optional)
a small splash of vanilla extract
1 large coffee mug
Add dry ingredients to mug, and mix well. Add the egg and mix thoroughly. Pour in the milk and oil and mix well. Add the chocolate chips (if using) and vanilla extract, and mix again.
Put your mug in the microwave and cook for 3 minutes at 1000 watts. The cake will rise over the top of the mug, but don’t be alarmed! Allow to cool a little, and tip out onto a plate if desired.
It was really a good experience to make a cake like this, that also in just 5 minutes. wow…….

I just tried the recipe and all was good, the batter tasted nice and everything but I kept it in the microwave for 6 minutes and it smelled burnt. I later realized that some of the portion inside the cake was burnt.
It didnt taste like a regular soft cake but more like a hard brownie.
Undoubtedly it tasted good but was hard and i think next time I am going to try adding some baking powder to it and just keep it in for 3 minutes. Oh and it dint even rise

all you need is to make a nice big cake is
8 oz self rasin flour
8oz butter
6 oz suger
4 eggs
then you put it in to a micowave bowel make sure you butter the bowl then put flour around it so the cake dont stick to the bowel
put it all in to a bowel mix it for 1 min untill light fluffy
put it on for 8 mins in the micowave touch the top to see if its soft and bouncy back then you know its done
ive maked loads cake my kids fav is wamy bamy 4 layer cover in choclate choc buttons

I made this one and it is perfect. It uses 2tbs whisked egg and also has 3tbs chocolate chips. It is amazing and so much better. This one has too much egg. The instructables recipe also uses vanilla essence.

I didn’t have any eggs so I did a brownie modification and it turned out amazing.
4 TBSP. flour
4 TSBP. brown sugar
2 TSBP. cocoa
2 TSBP. oil
2 TSBP. water
A little pinch of baking powder and a couple drops of vanilla.
Mix together, microwave in a cup on high for 1 minute. It won’t look done but let it sit for five minutes (it keeps cooking outside of the microwave) and it’ll be perfect… just the right measure of fudgy and cakey! And none of that eggy taste.
I mixed up some buttercream icing with about a tablespoon of softened butter, a couple drops of vanilla and enough icing sugar to make it thick and then scraped my brownie out on top of the icing to make a nice upside down brownie and it was incredible. Way better than those thick blobs of sugar and cocoa stores try to pass off as brownies. Now, I’m a pretty decent cook and I’d honestly say that this microwave brownie was a fair substitute. I just tried this on my day off, which is today. I LOVED IT! I highly suggest you don’t lick the spoon you mix with though, tastes horrible that way. After it was finished I loved it. Best with a bit of Whipped Cream on top! I even used Hot Choco Mix for mine, and it tastes just as wonderful. I could have dug out the actual cocoa, but I decided to leave it be. =)
Apparently most of the folks on this list haven’t ever had real cake or they wouldn’t be leaving the comments they are. To me this was a rubbery goo and not cake. I tried adding vanilla and there’s still no improvement on texture and no depth of taste. I won’t be wasting my ingredients again.
Where the crap does the 3 tbsp of oil go? One tbsp is enough. Great amount of oil you’re adding to contribute to obesity. But I’m going to alter it to my taste so it will turn out nicer.
I tried the recipe right now and it tastes wonderful!
But instead of cocoa I put gingerbread spices into it and then covered the ready cake in cranberry jelly.

I couldn’t be bothered to get cake flour at the store, so I just used about 2 1/2-ish tablespoons of regular all-purpose flour, and it turned out fine.
I also used hot cocoa powder instead of cooking cocoa powder. Whipped cream on top = I am a happy woman.
It was really wonderful. We enjoyed the cake..

This recipe seems really good, despite its simplicity. Actually, I think that simple is the best way to go when cooking, and this chocolate cake proves my point. Chocolate is one of the most delicious ingredients one can use in a cake, so I am sure that this tastes very well.
Here is a much moister recipe:
4 tbs. all purpose flour
4 tbs. sugar
2 tbs. cocoa powder (no instant chocolate milk mix)
2 tbs. milk
2 tbs. oil
1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
Mix all dry ingredients first
add all wet ingredients next
blend all ingredients together…but do not over mix
put in microwave for 2min
-It should come out more moist and kinda of like a brownie…

Just tried this, and it’s delicious! I drizzled a makeshift soybutter icing over it (I’m allergic to peanuts; you can substitute peanut butter if you’d like.):
1 scant Tbsp. soybutter
approx. 1/4 c. confectioner’s sugar
a splash of vanilla extract
a couple splashes of milk

tried this with pancake mix replacing the cake flour (thats all i had that was close) and milo powder replacing cocoa. tried the recipe in a bowl and it turned out yummy!! maybe i should have cut down on the sugar though since milo is already sweet.

If you are looking for a real cake, try something else. But if you are looking for something quick to make, fun and cheap, then you are on the right page !
The cake is very spongy at the end, plan something to drink with. Of course there is no crust (microwave cooking), but it’s worth the effort to make it, it’s eatable, even good, and you can probably adapt that recipe in countless different ways, even salted (with vegetables, meat…).

Substituting hot chocolate powder and all purpose flour was a complete disaster! I should have stuck to the recipe. Maybe the all purpose flour would’ve have worked but the hot chocolate powder completely butchered it.
Don’t get me wrong. It wasn’t that bad with chocolate frosting n some milk. But the point is that it wasn’t THAT BAD -> meaning it was bad somewhat. I say stick to the recipe by buying the recipe ingredients rather than wasting different ones. You will be happy you did so.
Not bad! As far as microwave cake goes, anyway. Reminded me of those Shiriff Pudding cakes, without the pudding. Not something I’d choose over real cake, but if I was having a major chocolate craving it would do in a pinch.

I modified it by switching the cocoa and the flour (4 tbsp cocoa, 2 tbsp flour) because the original wasn’t chocolate-y enough for me. Turned out pretty yummy!

Make sure to use a reasonably big cup… My boyfriends one kind of exploded and engulfed the cup. It literally looked like he’d taken a sh*t in a cup. -_-

more or less the same – barr one special extra Ingredient.
4 Tablespoons cake flour
4 Tablespoons sugar
2 Tablespoons cocoa
1 Egg
3 Tablespoons milk
3 Tablespoons oil
1 Mug
2 Bags of Weed – about a 1/4
Secret extra Ingredients- bit of weed, just trying them now – will let you know how it tastes

Substituted pancake mix for flour, used 2 egg yolks, brown sugar, nestle’s coco. Coat cup with margarine, put brown sugar and nuts in bottom.
Oh, also mix the liquids until foamy. It was good and not rubbery.
Conversion chart that may help some people
1 UK pint is about 6 dl
1 UK liquid oz is 0.96 US liquid oz.
1 pint = 570 ml = 20 fl oz
1 breakfast cup = 10 fl oz = 1/2 pint
1 tea cup = 1/3 pint
1 tablespoon = 15 ml
1 dessertspoon = 10 ml
1 teaspoon = 5 ml = 1/3 tablespoon

Hi made this today, thought its quick and was feeling something sweet. thought 4 tbs sugar is 2 much so cut it down to 2, BIG MISTAKE lol!!!! everything was nice about it, texture, moist bit fluffy shame i actually messed it up. Men and instructions… haha.
Didn’t have Cocoa Powder or Cake Flour, so I used All-Purpose flour (only 3 1/2 tbps), almond extract, and vanilla extract. Put it in a durable plastic container for 3 minutes. I was a little scared when it came out, but it turned out alright. Probably won’t make it for a while though due to all the sugar.
So.. mine turned out hard as a rock. I did just what it said to do..
So depressing. Now I will go out and buy some pre-made chocolate cake..
My husband makes this but he uses angel food cake mix and a box of any flavor of cake mix, mixes them together with 2 1/2 tablespoons of waters and microwaves them for a minute in a mug and all that. It’s just another short cut to the short cut way of making these, but they are wonderful!

Worked really well, I used melted butter instead of oil, doubled the cocoa powder, next time I might triple it, and made it in a bowl and I may have overdone the milk, I didn’t measure it. I also whisked it really hard. Came out a cute half round steamed cake, it was dense but very moist and didn’t turn hard as I was expecting.

I just made this using my microwave ( no idea what the wattage is) with regular canola oil and regular Fry’s cocoa with heaving teaspoons. Should have added chocolate chips but I didn’t have any. All and All, I had a craving, I made it in under 5 minutes, and it was decently good. Cute recipe, loads of quick fun. decent.
instead of cooking it for 3mins cook it for 1min 45sec and when you tip it upside down it comes out with a chocolate sauce on top. it tastes better like that

Being a “starving university student” with a cake craving, I made this recipe with what I had in my kitchen — hot chocolate mix (unsweetened Cocoa camino brand,) almond milk, and Starbucks Vanilla Via (because I didn’t have any sugar and there’s LOTS in that.) It turned out so friggin’ good and rich, I had to share with my roommates because I couldn’t even handle the awesomeness. Thanks for the post, I will definitely be making this again!
