Watering Me

WaterFor the past three weeks I’ve been cutting down on the coffee. If you read my blog regularly, you’d remember my post about coffee a while back; aka Kill The Coffee. Back then I used to have about 5 – 8 cups of 100% pure coffee every weekday. There are various reasons why coffee is bad for you. For me, the main reason was this:

Over weekends, when I didn’t have as much coffee as I do during week I’d get withdrawal symptoms. I had permanent headaches, muscle aches and a nauseous feeling. I knew that coffee was probably to blame, but I didn’t really care – if I just had enough coffee over the weekend it wouldn’t be so bad

When I realized how dependant my body had become, I decided to “water it down a bit”. Three weeks ago I started limiting myself to the amount of coffee that I would consume. Instead of having coffee, I’d have rooibos tea (proudly South African!), which doesn’t contain caffeine, and is a natural anti oxidant. Apart from that I kept a glass of water on my desk at work, which I filled up every so often – and actually found myself to become thirsty if given the chance!

I’ve also started eating a bit healthier. Avoiding all the nasty fats – sticking to olive oil, and feta cheese. I try to minimize the amount of sugar that I consume, and I also try to eat more fruit, which contain natural sweeteners. I eat a lot of vegetables, but I did that before. I cut bread out of my diet completely. The closest I will go is rye crackers – they’re sooo yum with feta cheese and gherkins ;)

Exercising has also become more of a priority to me. Though I should go to the gym I just can’t get myself so far. I started by jogging in my local neighbourhood – however dodgy it is. I do push-up’s, sit-up’s, crunches, and a couple of yoga stretches. I know its just the start, but as long as I make time for this, I think it will become a habit.

Maybe its too soon to tell, maybe my imagination is a bit overactive, but I think I feel better already. I sleep better, and feel well rested when I wake up. I don’t feel like snacking much either.

Wish me luck on my road to better health!

In fact, I’ve joined you a couple of weeks ago already… I did about 15 cups of 100% coffee a day and had the exact same problem as you with the weekends. So I’m down to 2 to 3 cups a day and about 3 to 4 litres of water a day.
