Who Are You?

SpySomething that’s been puzzling me for the past while, is who exactly reads my blog. Since I’m with Wordpress, I cannot use Google Analytics to check where all my visitors are from. On my other sites, I’ve setup Google Analytics, and its quite cool to see how small the world actually is. I’ve tried to figure out who would be interested in my blog; here’s my conclusion…

Firstly there’s the googlers - these are people that come across something that was posted either via google, or some other search engine. A lot of times these people don’t stay long, they either find what they were looking for, or they don’t.

Then there are the guys from the trafficking sites, such as BlogMad & 25 Peeps - once again, these will know within the first 8 seconds whether they like your blog or not. Some will stick around, and some will even return, but the majority seem to just browse past in their daily pursuit of credits.

People who you know read your blog. Whether they be friends, or just contacts from the net. These people probably have a blog of their own that you read too.

Lastly there are the snoops. These are the people that you KNOW. Your family, your friends, and even sometimes your co-workers. But you don’t know that they are reading your blog. They’re probably looking for something that you’ve leaked out onto your blog that they don’t know about yet. These people never leave comments, and would never admit to even knowing that you have a blog. I find it quite amusing to think that I’m being spied on… Just wonder if they find what they’re looking for.

If I’m missing a category, please feel free to correct me. Otherwise let me know which of these you are… If you have the guts!

I use google analytics on my wordpress sites. Just paste the code into the footer of your theme. :) Mine is just above the /body tag.

I have four blogs and they each seem to get the majority of their traffic in different ways. Two of them get a lot of traffic from the traffic engines and from fellow bloggers who have become regulars and friends. One gets a lot of hits from google searches (the gardening one), and my photoblog gets at least half it’s traffic from the photo sites.

I hate snoops! It’s weird when they never comment on your blog but only in real life.

Dragonden: I can’t edit my theme, thus I cannot insert the code for google analytics into my template :(

I checked the “fastest growing blogs” this morning, scrolled through yours, left a comment on coffee, and recognised S A from the photographs …

I would love to do more stuff with my blog, but a) haven’t got the time and b) I am a techno-idiot and never know what you people are talking about.

Realised my advanced age when I tried to read other “fastest growing” blogs and could not even make out what the heck the people were talking about. Wow, the world moves too fast now!

  13. eleanor October 11th, 2006 12:55 pm

I’m from the ‘fastest growing’ blog link too!!

hhehe interesing post. The way I figure out who is reading my blog is the old fashion way. look at the suffix of there email addresses. I think that’s a good way to that.

    Cheers,

    Hey!!!
You almost listed all ways of reaching a blog but one. Comments.
One of the way to get regular readers is to leave subject-relevant comments on other peoples blogs and as some people before me have commented, curiosity gets the better of us and we have to just go and see what the blogger is all about.

Add me to the list of “Visiting as you left me a comment on my blog and was curious enough to read yours”

    Thanks

  19. ollo October 12th, 2006 12:17 pm

Oh and I am on the list of “added to my blogroll” too :)

I originally clicked here when I noticed your shot on 25peeps looked a bit like a friend I hadn’t seen in about 15 years. Of course, you’re not her, but still interesting to read about - so I’m one of those strangers who happened along.

  21. Kristyn October 12th, 2006 3:23 pm

Oh yeah, I agree with FlatGreg, Snoops!! I have friends who read my blog and tell me “Oh I didn’t leave you a comment because I can just tell you in real life.” It’s creepy. Just leave me a comment already.

I’m here via your comment on my blog. Not sure how to catagorize that one. Maybe its its own catagory? :) Maybe I missed it above, it’s been known to happen.

I think it’s awesome that you’re still on 25Peeps and it’s a good pic. It’s funny how that pic that looks like boobs is really a guys behind. Makes me laugh every time I see it!! Good luck on 25Peeps!!

    Hi from Blogmad.

Congratualtions on passing the 8 seconds rule (it’s actually a 25 seconds rule). Actually, as much as I find it hard to believe the logic of Blogmad, where it seems like people surf for credits but hope to get meaningful viewers to their site, it seems to be working. People actually stop and look around, and sometimes they even leave comments.
